Production Volume Prediction
With the M235 selling at 1/5 (?) of the 3-series, wonder what the M2 production volume will hit?
Some of the potential 235 buyers will go upmarket, some M4 down; sure it will grab a couple of the 435 enthusiast. But outside of M-loyals, there will be more choices than in the past (GT 350, RS, R, CLA45, ATS-V). Predictions? |

Depending on how well marketing goes and hyped demands, double the number as stated above; 2,000+ units world-wide. It's all about numbers now with BMW as it projects sales up into the next decade.

740 1M were produced for the U.S. for 1 year so it will depend on how many years they make it and if there will be a convertible. Apples to Apples I say 1,200 a year in the US. 1M was manual only and I am assuming manual and DCT and if not 1,000 a year.

You guys are thinking much too conservatively. The first year's (2016) production will be limited only because the M2 is arriving late to the party but after that it will be as common as the M3/M4 (or as uncommon depending on your point of view).
Remember that this is going to be a parts bin model for the most part. It will have as much M3/M4 suspension, brake and wheel commonality and M235i engine/transmission commonality as BMW can possibly muster in the interest of economy of scale and reduced R&D overhead. |

No, I'm going totally off demand expectations. This will definitely be an enthusiast car, whereas the M3/4 is likely sold to a heavy amount of people who simply want the most expensive BMW they can afford. Those folks won't be buying M2s.
I live in BMW land and see more M4s than all 2 series combined. If the bigger M coupe sells 3 to 5 thousand a year and I see a single 2 series for every four M4s I see in Los Angeles, I'm guessing the M2 will be just as unpopular among the BMW yups, hence the 1k a year - selling pretty much to car enthusiasts. The M235i is rare and that car is priced and marketed to include more than the enthusiast crowd.

I see your point, although I'll tell you that people that want to buy the most expensive BMW they can buy are buying 750/740, M6, M6 Grand Coupes, M5, 550i, X6 50i, X6M, X5 50i, X5M and Alpinas to name a few. All at least as expensive and most more expensive than the M3/M4.
I suppose you are referring to the posers and indeed of those there are many. I happen to work, live and sell in BMW Land as well and it's my contention that the vast majority of the BMW faithful are purchasing the F80/F84 because they don't have a better choice yet. The only thing that will pace the production and sale of the M2 is BMW's criteria for bottom line maximization and the necessity to allocate it's resources accordingly. |

I see excellent points brought up by both Die ///M Rakete and hyperzulu. Both arguments have valid merits. Again, at day's end, it will be the profitability that will drive up or down its production numbers.

Right, I meant non-car people with enough money to buy a $75k car. They can't afford an M6 or they would buy it.
I think the 5k e92 M3s sold were not all sold to car people and I don't think the non-car people will be snatching up the M2. It doesn't have the affect they're looking for. At its expected price range, they'll opt for something else. 2k units sold, maybe. But I don't see the 3-5 thousand units like the M3 coupe. It will be enough to keep those interested happy, I'm guessing. Guess we'll see. I just want one for euro delivery in 2017. That's all. Hope BMW and my future me can work together to make that happen.

Sure, there are tons of 320s with 16' wheels (but they got Navi baby!) but not too many Ms.

On the other hand, I don't expect to be discounting the vehicle either. At least not initially. |

When I go to my local dealership (Classic BMW in Plano, TX), they seem to be moving some M4s, but I never see M3s. And they've had the same gray 235 on the lot for a while now...
In the wild, it is all 320, 328, some 428, and X3s...

The M235i is overpriced, that's why it's not selling more

M4 is $20k more than starting price for M235i -- $64,200 vs $43,100 actually.
