BMW 0W-40 hits the shelves
Just got 7 liters of the new oil from ECS. I wonder how long before the manual lists this as an acceptable oil for the F8x. Funny there is no mention of API on the bottle...SL? SN?

A bit off topic, but curious it makes no mention of Shell or its subsidiaries which I would assume is now the new provide - no?

I had my dealer special order the Shell M 0w40 and I tried this in my M4 at the 1200 mi service. I drained that stuff out in 100 miles. The car subjectively felt like crap. The engine had no sensation of wanting to pull on the top end. As soon as I refilled with the Shell 5w30 the motor was instantly back to life.

Interesting post. I am getting an interim oil change at the dealership for my first track event of the year and I'll admit that if this is where BMW has gone (M-specific oil and viscosity), I'm happier.
The engine will have been designed around a particular viscosity due to the oil passages, orifices, piston squirters, etc. Not that 0W-40 is particularly heavier than 5W-30 when at operating temp, but will provide slightly thicker viscosity. Regarding Tony007's experience, I guess I'm surprised that the engine reacted in this fashion. We shall see. It does appear BMW has replaced the BMW High Performance 5W-30 with this new 0W-40 part number 83212365945KT |

Interesting that bottle says "made in the US" while all the ones here say "made in the EU" (5w-30 and 10w-60. Havent seen any 0W-40 here yet)
The oil for the new Shell BMW range is supposed to be from the Qatar Gas to Liquids plant (GTL). So I wonder if there are regional variations in all the mixes if the final products since the final products are seemingly not made in Qatar.

The back of these newer bottles mention GTL (Gas to Liquids) technology.

The F8X coolant temps do not seem rise at all even under extreme conditions at the track, but does anyone know if there is a way check oil temps in the iDrive system? I know the newer Corvettes have this ability, would think the M3/4 does too. Coolant temps and oil temps can be drastically different.
If oil temps rise more than we realize, the 0W-40 oil would be an advantage.

Anyone else that uses this please update how it goes. So far we have 1 negative and 1 positive outcome. I just ordered the new shell version 5w-30 because I didn't want to risk anything, but will get this next time around with more input.

Oil change
Just had the oil changed in my F82 (interim at 7,000 miles) and the oil noted on the repair order is BMW LL-01 5W-30 part # 07-83-21-2-405-085
Anyone seen this part number before? Did a quick search but haven't found it. |

Did an interim oil change last night with the 0W-40 oil. Haven't done many miles yet to test any subjective changes in the running character of the car. I was a bit surprised at the amount of metal shimmer still circulating. Did the change at 3000 miles and was doubting wasting the 100 bucks, but now happy I did it.

I hope no one actually believes a slight variation in oil viscosity makes any perceptible difference in engine performance. |
