Drove through a large "puddle"
Alright, so I know it's not a good idea to go through standing water...but with the torrential downpour yesterday, was cruising along and took a turn, as I rounded the corner, I didn't have an opportunity to slowdown and ended up going through a cringe-worthy amount of water along my right side - maybe 6-8 inches of standing water. Lot of spray, etc. resulted. Knowing this is a low clearance car and they've jammed a lot of components into the bottom portions of it, do I have any cause for concern wrt potential component, transmission or engine damage? Have driven the car a bunch since then and it felt a little rough at times but I think that may just be psychosomatic. So the real questions:
1) If something got messed up, I'm assuming the car would warn me? 2) Do I need to continue to monitor for resulting issues or, if something was going to get messed up, would it already have gotten messed up 3) Am I vastly overthinking this |

Did you feel the car ground out?
Have you looked on that side of the car for physical wear or broken plastic etc?\ If not consider it a good undercarriage wash. |

If the car is running well then you are very likely fine. If water got into the engine through the intake or some other way, you would likely know it already and it would be pretty obvious.

My wife wrote her 335is off driving through about 8 inches of water. It hydrolocked the engine when the intake sucked the water in.The insurance wrote of the car the next day due to unseen water in the electronics. As she now knows you have to be real careful with deep standing water with BMW's.

Thanks guys. To answer your questions, I didn't feel the car ground out and the plastics, etc. all look ok. No visual damage. Also no water residue or fogging in the headlights, etc.
I'm guessing that I'm just being a little crazy about this at this stage... On the bright side, I now know that if I see any standing water, I should default to veering into oncoming traffic instead! |

If there was really an issue, your post would be something along the lines of you waiting for a tow.

They build these cars to handle every day situations like this. That's a good reason they're not lowered a much as we want from the factory I've driven through some serious puddles without a choice and never had a problem.
As long as you're not fording a river with a fully loaded covered wagon you will not die of dysentery on the Oregon Trail.

I've seen multiple incidents of engines hydrolocking in a BMW due to standing water. However, if the engine is still running and the car isn't throwing any faults/warnings I definitely wouldn't worry about it. Just be careful in the future.

though i did contract a case of dysentery yesterday, but that probably is due to the kabab place i ate at last night |
