Thieves out and about...

Neighbour called me over this morning to tell me at 3am this morning, 2 men pulled up and got out of a nissan micra. put on balaclavas and were holding crow bars. Neighbour called police immediately, watched them approach my car and try and open it, but luckily no luck and then moved and damaged another 3 series further up my road. I have moved the OBD port, security film on the glass, alarm but i think the main deterrent was the stop lock. They damaged the other car to get in but they got spooked and left.

Neighbour spoke to Police who have told her that there is 'something small' but valuable in BMW engines that they just pop the bonnet, take and go.
They also use a suction tool to open doors now?

i had noticed the last few days that there was a bit more than previously seen clearance on my bonnet and grill. please keep your eyes peeled and anyone know what they are after?

I live east london/essex and we have seen a huge increase in crime and car crime recently. Very annoying but grateful my car was not touched but also worried they will return...... i think the stoplock was a huge factor!

please keep your eyes peeled and anyone know what they are after as it is not the car?

"'something small' but valuable in BMW engines that they just pop the bonnet, take and go"

where your car and the other 3 series the same engine? or could it be something that's common across the range?

Parts to order! A holes. You know I can imagine it's not difficult to pinch wheels as well. Would like to get a custom locking nut myself.

This thread has caused me to buy a steering wheel lock. They may be able to get it off but it might just be enough for them to f* off elsewhere!

Yes and then you'd be at fault of course for hurting them. The world is screwed

Locking nuts aren't as safe as they used to be we have a kit at work now to remove locking nuts when customers have lost the key. It's a relatively cheap kit compared the price of a wheel. If you buy some locking nuts look for the ones that use a collar around the actual locking key! I think Vauxhall already use them from factory much better than the Bmw ones

I was going to get a disklock but those things are so frikin big! The wheel lock I have ordered uses a key which looks harder to pick or get into than the other wheel locks I've seen. It'll probably last 20 seconds with a well equipped thief. Adding a tracking device as backup.

cheers guys. i went to buy a CCTV from Maplin today but by time they guy showed me all the stuff i needed to record etc it was in the hundreds of pounds. CCTV is great and cheap unless you want to record!

I just downloaded an Apple cctv app for my old iphone to leave at the window so hopefully that gets the number plate at a minimum if they return. they have targeted other cars as mentioned but our neighbours X5 has been targeted a few times and they now want to sell their X5 but if the thieves win then we would all be driving Lada's.... in fairness they bought a stoplock and touch wood X5 has been left alone.

Pricks, a friend of mine got broken into in the middle of the night and some guys beat the hell out of him with a bat while he was in bed before he had a chance to do anything. Some real nasty people out there.

Mate, you could get one of those little mobius cameras (something like £55), a tripod (for the grand cost of 99p!) for it or something to mount and a usb charger that plugs in. Plug the camera into the charger and just leave it on a continuous loop recording. I think a 32gb mem card will store around 5 hrs of 1080p. Lower quality will probably store more and I think the camera will handle 64gb micro sd cards.
Better yet it has a mode to take pictures every x seconds. Adjustable from 0.25 secs to 30 secs. I tested it once out of a hotel window.

The pictures get stored on the SD card in a sequential number.
I used a tool to combine them into a video.

I'm not associated with the seller but here's one:

Here's an example timelapse vid I made:

I am curious what this "small but valuable" item is, we all know our cars pretty well and I can't think of anything in the engine that can be removed in seconds that's worth anything.

The vauxhall ones aren't much better. Get a slightly oversized socket and a big hammer and they can be undone like any other wheel bolt.
