Dallas Sales Tax
New resident of Texas here from Oregon (no sales tax). I was wondering what rate is paid on new cars when bought in DFW since both Dallas and Tarrent County have 8.25%? Is that the rate that is charged or is it the state's 6.25%?
If it is 8.25% would it be possible to buy a car out of state and pay the 6.25% instead when registering it in Texas per the DMV website's information? Thanks!

Sales tax on new cars statewide in Texas is 6.25 percent; there are no municipal taxes allowed beyond flat fees.
Also, if you have a trade-in, it is lawful to only charge sales tax for the difference between trade-in value and the new car selling price. IOW: If your new car costs $45K and you get $25K for a trade-in from the same dealer, you will only pay tax on $20K. That said, selling dealerships often undervalue trade-ins knowing that they can offset the tax savings by turning a larger profit on the trade-in when it's sold.
