M4 oil change

First M car owned...
I got my car in August of 2014. Did the 1200 mile service in October. Currently have about 1600 miles on the car weather has been horrible this winter haven't driven much. Should I change my oil every 6 months if I'm not putting a lot of miles on the car.. How long before oil changes if miles are kept low thanks

IMO your oil is still brand new with only 400 miles, I would change it once a year with low milage. With greater milage I would change every 5 or 6k on car you plan to keep a while or that gets driven hard.

I have a related matter I'm trying to figure out in my head. When to change oil in my car since dealer did 1200 mile service at only 700 miles. I'm thinking of changing at about 2,500 for peace of mind along with diff oil.

Considering the fact that oil is the cheapest yet most important service on a car, I wouldn't overlook it. Replace it every 5k miles or 5 months.. Whichever comes first

I am a service manager and cannot stress enough to my customers how important oil is in the longevity of a vehicle..

You will find no shortage of opinions on the subject.
And that's even before you dare to ask for advise on what brand of oil is best

Start with the above approach, then collect the used oil sample and send it to Blackstone Labs for analysis:
http://www.blackstone-labs.com/free-test-kits.php

This will provide an objective evaluation of how your oil is fairing with your driving style under your environmental conditions.

In the past I had tested synthetic oil coming out of BMW and MINI turbo engines, and the results always suggested longer interval then 5-6K, but shorter than 11K (I screwed up one time).

Once a year or 6000 miles should be good enough.

+1 !!! Absolutely dead on. Forget people's subjective opinions- test your oil. The Audi forums did this with ~50 of us in RS4s using different oils so that we could come up with the best, easily available, oil to use in the car. Worked really well. Would be nice if we could get a group of people to do an oil test here as well.

I just recently had my 1,200 mile break-in oil change, so probably wont be in position to collect the sample until late summer/fall. But will absolutely send it to Blackstone Labs for the next oil change, which I'm tentatively planning for around 7.5K miles.

I had the 1200 mile service done at end of Nov. 2014 and just changed the oil again yesterday at 4,949 miles. I was going to change the differential also, but service advisor talked me out of it b/c it was changed at 1200. I'll continue changing oil every 5K miles going forward, but how often should you change differential?

I am looking to get an M3 in another year or two after some of the first year bugs are worked out. Hopefully they have a competition package by then. I plan on doing the 1200 mile oil and diff service and then do the oil again at 5000 miles. I will do oil changes with filter every 5k after that and a diff service every 30k. For me it will take quite a while to get to 30k because of low mileage usage.

"Old school maintenance schedule" calls for 30K diff and manual tranny oil changes:
