OT: downforce vs power

When 6 tons of downforce meets 10,000hp.

Driver Larry Dixon walked away unharmed today.

Good grief! I'm glad the driver is ok! That's an amazing photo.

What failed, how come the car is airborne?

Wow.

Just goes to show that little reinforced safety zone they sit in really is the difference between life and death.

Looks like the front part of the chassis gave way!

It's airborne because it's doing nearly 300mph at that point. 6 tons of downforce on the rear wing, probably a ton on the front, and 10,000hp trying to bend the car into a banana.

Properly assembled and certified roll cages save these guys often.

Are the chutes in inertia / crash switches or manual only?

I don't know to be honest. I think they are manual, although the halon fire bottles are automatic, so maybe they are linked in too.

Bloody hell that was one hell of a ride. Never mind the safety cell, glad to see it didn't catch alight. I assume that fluid coming out is nitro as I was under the impression these engines have no liquid coolant...Lorcan?

Yes there's no cooling. The nitro fuel cell is in the narrow bit in the front of the car, away from the engine and in the best place for weight distribution.
