OT - Have been driving the 2 series convertible

I am spending this week riding around in a 2 series convertible, and very nice it is too, I have to say.

The last convertible that I had (in fact, the only one I ever owned) was a 2004 Boxster S. Now, I’m not going to pretend that this is a Boxster S, but it’s certainly nippy and neat enough (I have been driving the 245hp 228i version) and seems like it could be a nice little car to have a bit of fun in, especially as it’s got some M Sport goodies including brakes and adaptive suspension (which is actually fine in normal mode, for me). It's also got Pilot Super Sports on the wheels and the VSS. So that probably all combines and helps the feel.

It’s Glacier Silver with a red interior, which is not a combo I would go for on paper, but it looks pretty smart, i have to say. I think it helps that there is a fair amount of black inside to balance the red.

Glacier does seem to suit the shape of the car (I looked at an M235i in Glacier earlier in the year and thought it was great), and it’s a crisper, stronger silver than some (a slight tinge of grey in it). The car is in a “Sport” trim which I think really suits it as well, more so than the M Sport trim, I reckon.

It’s got an anthracite top which, to be honest, seems a little understated and I reckon it could handle an interior-matching red roof (but you can’t get one).

Inside, it’s completely familiar to anybody who is used to the present BMW layouts and specs, and that’s not a bad thing.

The only thing I would say that counts against it from my point of view is that it’s not got much space in the boot, especially when you have the top down (you can make more room in the boot if you commit to having the top up, but it’s not a massive difference).

Overall, though, this experience is really making me look again at the 2 series for my next car. Probably the coupe, not the convertible, though. I've got a feeling that the M2 is going to be out of my price range, so maybe an M235i..?

I drove the coupe and liked it as a driving experience. Not convinced on it looks wise unless it's got the full M performance package and 405 wheels though, actually prefer the 1 series hatchback over it.

The 2 series and 1 series convertibles just always looked like a woman's car for some reason, in a way that the old e46 convertible or hardtop 3 convertibles never did. Not sure why though.

It's not my car so I can't really let you have pictures of it... But it does look exactly like it does on the configurator, so I'll spec one up on there to the same spec as this one and send the link to that...

That's cool Dave, might be some good deals on M235is when the M2 comes out....or it might stop! No pictures for the forum chums too, tut tut.

Agree it looks lovely in GS and agree with others then 2 needs a few MPerf trinkets to set it off. I look at BMWs now that are 'non M' cars and it is scandalous how they are toned down to make you want that M car look.

Looking out my window now my neighbours 10yr old Fiesta has more flared arches than the stock 2 series and M235i. Reason...to get a full aggressive look you need the M2.

Anyone else think the arches are getting really really flat on BMWs now, almost Audi like parallel to the body! Look at this red M235i it has no real aggression to the arches, poor! An Evoque has a muscular look and so does this Fiesta, just feels a bit watered down.

Rant over. I must be hungry.
