328 servicing and maintenance costs

I'm planning on keeping my 328 for a long time. So it would be useful to know what costs we are looking at in the long term.

I have a service plan but would like to know what I'm in for after that expires.

So for anyone having to pay for service, maintenance, repairs etc would appreciate if you could post up

- mileage of car
- what was done and how much

Thanks!

It's an interesting question - but figuring that an extended warranty is $1500/yr it will probably be wise to budget at least that!

I figure it this way in years 5-8 post warranty..

1. Regular basic maintenance (oil, pads, consumables) - say $500/yr
2. BMW specific - Shocks, plugs, coils etc - say $1000/yr
3. Exotic broken parts - iDrive, suspension, switches - $1000/yr

As a benchmark - my last car cost about $1500-2k per year so I would be expecting double that.

I'll be carefully looking at the numbers because that is a lot of money!

My 3 year zero cost service will expire in October. As in past years with my previous BMWs, after the initial warranty expired, I took my car to a local independent BMW specialist for servicing. Much cheaper than the dealers - and negotiable.

I am fortunate to have 2 such specialists close to me.

Then again, if you can secure a comprehensive extended warranty plan, it may be the way to go. I may look into it myself.

At first glance those numbers look high but I think you may be on the money.

I kept my e46 for 10 years. First 3 years was golden but then it started to bleed money. I dreaded the major service, at least 4k every 2 years. Then few months later it would be this then that. I wasn't even driving the car!

Last year I got rid of it after spending 5k and a further 2k DIY which Bmw wanted another 5k for. Tbh there wasn't even anything major! Just service, repairs, gaskets, door lock, alternator etc. I made mistake of full Bmw service - they really are incompetent.

I am interested to hear if anyone have had to have brake pads (and maybe rotors) replaced and how much it is. My service plan expires in November and unlike David I am nowhere near a good independent specialist. My lease has still got 20 months to go so I guess I am up for an out of pocket service.

Your dealer can tell you roughly what the cost is for parts and labour at each major service, which will give you an idea if the extended service and warranty packages will be worthwhile for you and grounds to compare to an indi workshop.

I used to ask the SA for the part numbers and ordered them off ecs tuning. Usually 50% savings often more. I would then only pay for the labour.

I remember they wanted $800 for an E70 wing mirror motor. Part cost me $250 and did it myself. Not so sure with the current exchange rates though.
