X5M E vs F

I swear if you put led lights and the new 612M shoes on the E70 X5m its a better looking car on the outside.

Interior - no question the f series has brought it so won't even go there.

Beyond the superficial stuff - anyone want to summarize what is "better" about this new one?

Gas mileage - slightly better
Transmission - probably somewhat better but old one never bothered me
Weight seems negligable
HP/Torque - could argue its negligable given size of the elephant and ability to play with aftermarket goodies on both
Brakes - cross drilled rotors

2021 M550xi  [0.00]
8 speed auto vs. 6 speed auto
~50 more lb-ft of torque
0.5 second faster 0-60. 4.0 sec vs 4.5 sec (!)
21 inch forged aluminum wheels standard
6 piston front brakes with drilled rotors

There's a whole lot more but these few changes alone makes the new X5M a whole different animal.

I drove the new X5M at a BMW event on a racetrack and that thing will put some sports cars to shame.

The old X5M was so so. My F15 50i feels faster.

Your F15 50i isn't faster and more importantly, does not drive even remotely close as well an E70M. No argument looks to be many improvements in the F over the E, but real world practicality? My situation is, is it all worth nearly $45K more than my current 2013 E70M that has only 24K miles. I have a 2015 on order, actually finishing production today its just a lot more money..

F15 50i is almost as fast as e70m if not the same. Carandriver posted 4.3 on xline 50i. With dhp and M sport performance bbk upgrade, (same as e70m) the difference between the 2 is even more blurred. I don't know how "remotely" far you are talking about but I've driven both and it's close enough to me. I would take 50i over dated e70m anyday.

New M is a lot more modern looking with updated interior, HUD and suspension. Too bad I didn't want to wait another year when I bought my x5, or I would've seriously considered the new x5m. Good thing is it leaves excuse for m4 or M5 as valid next choice in the family.

Very interesting post - I've been thinking about the same thing as well as I currently drive an e70 35d. I have driven the new Fs and for some reason, they feel less "solid" and cheaper in material than the e70. Anyone else came to the same conclusion?

On a side note, having owned 4 BMWs in the past 5 years, they seem to feel cheaper in quality as they progress - more flash and style no doubt, but cheaper, stamped out feel.

I like the interior of the Fs, but that's out it. I'd still rather have my 2013 E70M and with 12k miles. The body style of the F seem to be less aggressive looking to me.

I do have to say the E70M looks like an M. The F85 looks like an m-sport with minor differences. I can pick an e70M from a distance. The f85M is not as easy.

I agree with you. But having come from an M Sport F15 I think there's sufficient enough of a change to make it very noticeable.

The design is certainly toned down quite a bit, but based on what I've read it's all been done purposefully. Every scoop and breather has been designed to get air where it's needed - and that's some 10 radiators plus the brakes.

I said the same thing about my F10 M5. Compared to my 550, visually there weren't as many cues as say a regular E9x to the M version. Just the bumper, side grilles, and exhaust. But I still loved it.

I can't wait for this thing.

I can't wait to see how it performs next to the old one. I just don't see much printed about how it will outperform. Guess that is what i was getting at...

Generally by the time a new m3/m4/m5 is released its very clear whats better about it.

My friend has a '12 X5M and agree that it looks different than the other X5's of that year but keep in mind that M Sport came late to the model year '12/13. When the 2014 came out it seems that the M Sport became a huge hit and I believe the designers tried very little to change the look outside but did a great job inside with the seats and the upgraded leather packages.

Differentiation was much more apparent on the E70M I think because the E70M had the X6 front end, with the X6 more narrow headlights not to mention the very different front bumper and huge air damn. So it was easy to spot an E70M. Now it seems regardless of model all Msports have huge openings in the air damn. E70/71M and maybe to some extent 1M coupes were the first with this design. We'll have to see how different the F series M will be from a simple M sport in real life but aside from the front a bit looks very similar.

EVERY car company is putting up huge air dams these days on even the most mundane fords and toyotas

granted they look like sh*t. even the m-sport looks like they glued a few waffle irons on the front. M should allow for grills/mesh to be painted like porsche does. that would help set it apart and provide more finished look. Gloss black on the mesh or dark grey titanium would look great.

those odd plastic bits look cheap to me on the F just on top of the R&L intercooler vents. Wonder what those are for anyway? matte plastic was a bad choice
