Tyres, need some advice.
Going to Santa Pod again soon. Have run-flats fitted at the moment.
I have a set of non run-flats. I will get them fitted if i am going to get an advantage down the strip. With Run-flats letting the pressures down to get more contact are with the tarmac does not work as the tryes are designed to run ''flat'' anyhow. Do you think with the non-runflats and dropping the pressures down considerably that it will help? i do lose traction there anyhow and im going to hopefully be mapped before then so traction may well be an issue? whats your thoughts? Carlos

Thinking about it from a purely physics standpoint I would think that a lower pressure (despite giving a larger contact area with the road) required more torque for acceleration. Im sure as a kid you have ridden a bike with a slow puncture and its certainly takes more effort as there is more friction with the road and the energy goes into deforming the tyre wall rather than motion.
I guess the only way is to try it ps From memory F1 cars use pure nitrogen as temperatures and pressure influence its behaviour less... but I guess thats a little too far for Santa Pod |

I'd drop them a psi or two, max 4.
I doubt that in your "new to Drag racing" phase i.e. for the first severel sessions the PSI will make much difference vs. your reaction times launch technique. This will I think have more of an impact... When are you going ? I quite fancy this... SJ |

I would have thought with a highly spec'd race tuned motor then the fine details such as tyre pressures 'may' and probably do make some, albeit a little difference.
With a std Beemer 3 series with an auto box, I really would not worry about it!! Even with a re-map you are probablt talking about 1/100ths of a sec difference with different pressures? The difference between differing reaction times and the auto box giving you the shove forward surely will have more importance than a few psi's in your tyres? Just get em nice and sticky before hand and go for it! PS - did not know you were thinking of a re-map |
