Parking in San Francisco

Hi Guys:

Next week, My wife and I are going to do a road trip from LA to San Francisco and I was just wondering if anyone on here might know a “good”, “safe” overnight self parking garage in the Union Square (san Francisco) area. My Hotel have valet but I always try to avoid that option. Thanks in advance guys!!!!

Stuff the valley on the passengers seat and tell him to show you the way. That's what I do.

Hmm I would just rent a car for the trip. Other than that I would just tip a little more so that they just leave it up front.

Victor is right.

Id rent a car. The hills in SF will murder your front end. They have a ton of people who will hit your car and run off because they don't have insurance or they don't want it to sky rocket because the insurance is already high there. Everything is parallel parking so you run the risk of curbing a wheel too. They do give no front plate tickets every chance they get and if you don't curb a wheel as well.

Sorry to scare you but i used to live there and left because of those reasons. lol..

On Geary between Leavenworth and Jones there's a parking lot. If you pre pay they will leave you a spot all weekend (spots run out quick in the city) the guy who works there has a fixed up sti. And the other guy that works in the mornings has a older 993 porsche. Cool guys definitely will watch your car for you. Also every time I park there, there's a older ferrari that's been then for a couple years. I believe there might be residence upstairs and it belongs to someone who lives there. Or you can do what lups said. I live in downtown la. I usually offer them the valet fee plus tip and ask them to point out where they want me to park. I pay the valet fee for the spot and the tip so that I can keep my keys. Ahhh and never never leave anything visible in your car. The bums will smash your windows for coins, iPod, cigarettes and anything else they feel is valuable

Many (most?) hotels that offer valet also offer paid self-parking as well. I would just do that, then walk or use Uber or Lyft to get around the city to avoid parking your car on side streets and such.

I spent a week in SF the other week and that worked beautfully. Uber offers "Uberpool" in the SF, and costs only $5 for up to two passengers to anywhere in SF. Lyft is also an option, and if you've never used it before and you sign up, chances are you'll get a bunch of free starter credits for the first week or two.

I used that in San Fran and it was very useful. Uber in San Fran is great.
Drive the M3 up there. The car is made to be driven and looks good. When I was up there a few weeks ago I saw a few F80/82 driving around town.

I don't know what your referring too. But it's on the north side of the street smack in the middle. Diagonally across from a hotel and the Redford bar I believe it's called (I forget, we always visit my girls sister who lives on Geary and Leavenworth) never had a problem with scratches and what not like I hear about in the bigger structures around town. The entrance is a slight uphill ramp. If your driving down Geary on the one way it's to the right.

I drove up to SF with my girlfriend several weeks back in my M3, I stayed at the Marriott in Union Square, I just paid a little extra for the "VIP" parking and they left my car towards the front of the valley service entrance for the duration of my three days there. I walked or took public transportation while I was there, only time I drove was on the last day to cruise on the Golden Gate bridge. Just as a heads up, the 5>80>580 are TERRIBLE freeways up north, the potholes are the size of moon craters, I pulled over so many times to check the condition of my tires.

It may be somewhat of a huge detour but the 101 all the way up is a more scenic and less boring drive, and the freeway conditions are better. I hope you drive the speed limit or have an Escort or Valentine because you will need it.

Geez guys come on it's not so bad driving here! Parking can be hard so don't drive too much around the city-as others have mentioned plenty of transportation options while you're in town.

I would recommend you not park in the a Union Square area garage - too expensive and sketchy. If you need your car a lot, park it at your hotel. If you don't look for a garage further down in the financial district which will be cheaper and less busy on weekends.

One thing I would do when driving up is leave super early. Got to San Fran from LA in 4 hours, beat out all the truck traffic and slow drivers.

I've stayed at Parc 55, Hilton, InterContinental, the W and Four Seasons. The parking garages are pretty safe, but costs average $50-60 a night. And yeah, like everyone said its not worth it to drive, its cheaper to use Uber.

Earlier this year we went to SF - wanted to try using Uber exclusively for the first time while visiting...needless to say - never gonna do it any other way again! Beyond convenient, trying to find parking to all the spots you'd want to visit in SF is a pain, let alone in a brand new M3/M4...i'd have an anxiety attack!
