Fuel gauge

This has been irritating me for a while, the fuel gauge on my 330d is all over the place

When I fill up the gauge never makes it to full (about one mark shy of full)
After about 80 motorway miles the gauge indicates 3/4 full
Then is very erratic between 1/2 full and 3/4 full (again motorway miles)

Today it was taking the £$%^ - started off indicating 1/4 full, 20 miles into the journey and it was indicating 1/2 full

I appreciate that fuel gauges aren't super accurate but this one seems to be way off (not had a problem with previous BMWs that i've owned)

So the questions are - is the gauge faulty, anyone else have the same problem (i.e. is this normal), ignore it

Thanks

take it in, get it fixed under warrenty...nothing worse than a bad gauge.

Ask my wife...my e46 left her on the side of the road with an empty tank showing 1/2 full.

Probably more likely a problem with the sending unit than the gauge itself.

Guages on BM's seem to be more accurate than most cars and always move very slowly - unless you have an M3 There is definitely something wrong with yours I would think.

I can go off E46 fuel gauges, when one goes faulty you get random readings, yes there are 2 sender units in the tank and average readings are taken for a more accurate stable reading. Most probably same for E9* range

Not come across what you are experiencing - as SoYank says sounds like faulty sender unit in tank. Get it checked out under warranty.

Thanks for the replies

You have confirmed my thoughts, a trip to the stealers is required though I may leave the visit till the first service in 7000 miles
