Just a quick update.
Decided after having lots of white smoke at random intervals to get another Egr cooler to try before any further investigation.
Turns out the old the egr cooler was allowing water into the exhaust manifold and then creating a lot of steam. (also explains the coolant loss that i couldnt trace)

Replaced with another cooler the difference is big. Cold start there is now only minimum fumes from the exhaust. No white clouds appearing and clear under acceleration from cold.

So anyone having issues with white smoke at random intervals i highly advise to check your egr cooler and change the thermostat at the same time.

The job took me around 3 hours to complete and is pretty straight forward. probably could have done it quicker but just found it more fiddly than anything. Not much room to work. Saved a trip to the garage!!

e90 330d cooler is the same as a 320d for note!
