330d MPG Woes

Hi Guys

First winter with my 330D and I know the weather is very cold and diesels don't like the cold weather but in my E90 Pre LCI I'm getting 22-24MPG and 31MPG on a reasonably long run, is this normal?

The car is an auto which I know saps some MPG but I never expected it to be so bad!

Nobody drives the same way in the same conditions, so nobody will have the same figures. So you can't compare.

If there is a noticeable difference between figures you got a few months ago to what you are getting now, then you may have a problem.

Nipping around town I get 27ish.
when I drove to London I got 50.

Garage List
I do a 135 mile round trip to work and back Monday to Friday. Majority of that is A1(M), M18 and M1 (50MPH zone).

My 330D Auto is averaging 38MPG. I don't drive economically either.

I'd say I could get it about 40MPG without problem.

Mixed driving my Manual 330 D pre Lci is averaging 37/38mpg split between 40% motorway 60% A roads.

I work shifts ( earlys and nites ) so avoid alot of heavy daily grind traffic, but when i do have to drive in town traffic my Mpg does go down sum what..

i changed my main stat just before crimbo and my running temps went from 70/71c after 9 miles to 88/91c after 9 miles..

i've also just fitted a Dtuk tuning box so hoping my Mpg can stay up around 39 mpg average with so boot fulls from time to time...

I had a 330d E93 LCI when it was just under a year old from 4k miles (those who are interested with run-ins of new cars)

I used to get 26mpg in towns average at best! If being driven like it was stolen you're looking at 22mpg

Motorways 40mpg

Edit: it was Auto

Auto 330d lci here. Currently averaging 31mpg but do a lot of short journeys <2 miles at a time probably about 6-10 times a week. A 20 mile motorway trip will see 42-45mpg without difficulty, closer to 50mpg if you really take it easy.

I'm in a pre LCI 330d and never drop below an average of 39mpg.
That's a mix of town and fast A roads.

This is how to find the hidden menu:

If you find that when driving and not at a stand still your engine temps are below around 82-84 degs then I would change the thermostats. Even when ther weather is ice cold the temps should be at around 88-93 for a normally running 330d/335d.

If you are confident in doing this yourself then there is a DIY for the job. If you can't find it let me know.

Good luck and keep us posted.

People who are getting early/mid 40s around town are "driving miss daisy" or talking bull!

Expect anything from 32 to 44mpg... depending on how you drive. Less than 32, something will be wrong, as if you're driving that fast for it to be your average.... you should not be on the road!

Interesting thread. My 320d's mpg has dropped recently. Averaging 38mpg (basically all town driving, bit of 50mph 'A') Thought it was the cold recently?

I have pre LCI 330D M Sport and in the summer was getting about 40-42 mpg. Now in the winter i'm getting about 35-37 mpg, I can feel the car doesn't like cold mornings for sure. But when warmed up to 90 dg it's fine, so thermos being good is crucial.

I had both my thermostats replaced last year as both were knackered, that can affect your mpg massively, with both duff I was getting about 30 mpg

So people are either driving too fast or to slow.....
No bull just what the idrive states. Manual and LCI which will result in better mpg. As if you need to stretch a 3.0 litre in a 30mph? I use the power when i am on b roads and motorways.
