E90 Handbrake

Hi

I've had my new 320 for a week now and I'm happier with it than I expected.

However, when applying the handbrake on slopes and releasing the foot brake, the car rolls very slightly (a few cms) before stopping. Is this usual or should I be getting back to the dealer?

The only other vehicle I've experienced this on is my Landrover and that's due to the transmission brake!

Cheers,

that is normal movement, the owners handbook & highway code also instruct you to leave the vehicle in 1st gear or park if auto when parked on slopes to avoid 'rolling'.

Cheers Guys, glad to know it doesn't need to go back after a week (unlike the Focus ST I had previously).

Really? what happened with the ST?

re-map your 320d and it will be quicker than the ST anyway LOL.

Less than a week old and the power steering pump developed a pin hole. Result was steering fluid being sprayed over the exhaust manifold (that smelt nice) and the car being towed away from my house by the RAC!

Unfortunately my new pride and joy is a company vehicle and I can't make any mods to it without the okay from the lease company. I tried to get them to allow me to Bluefin the ST and was told to go away! The best I got away with was a K&N panel filter, but then I had to swap it back everytime it went for a service as I didn't tell them.

To be honest, at 177 bhp, it has more power than the ST, is only slightly slower 0 to 60 and has a faster top speed. On top of that, its more comfortable, better spec'd (especially with all the toys I added) and handles better so far (not bad considering the ST handling was great!). Can't wait until its done 1250 miles so I can really try it out!

oh you mean the mk1 ST170, i thought you meant the Current ST. No wonder she is quicker.
Enjoy your beast, and your lease company wont know she is re-mapped!

why not look into one of the Diesel tuner boxes that are being mentioned elsewhere on the uk forum.. Total stealth 'cos you can take it out just like your K&N.

I use something similar in my i and to be honest couldn't now imagine driving a stock 335i, it would seem a little slow.

You can also kid yourself that you're doing the company a favour as they DEFINITELY help with fuel consumption when you're cruising

And don't fall for the re-flash is always better malarky... I think a lot of crap is spouted by companies offering flashes for inordinate amounts of money that often offer less gains, are a pain to hide 'cos they get flashed over EVERY time you go to the dealer and actually offer no tangible advantage other than supposedly being more elegant ?! go with what suits you and the wallet.

My Steinbauer box is good - it's a little bit flat below 2k, then "suddenly" wham bam thanks very much. I quite like it though but you drive round it.

The 320d does response nicely...

Anyway, back to handbrakes - mine does this, always wondered why? Why so much "sag"? No other car I've had has done it?

Mine does this as well - when it happens always reminds me of the behaviour of a vehicle with auto transmission. Not sure if the hand brake is held on the rear pads or there is a separate mechanism in the rear drive for the handbrake. As I know some larger cars have a separate "unit" for handbrake so convential pads and discs aren't used.

That would be similar to my Landrover. The handbrake is a seperate drum on the prop shaft, when you release the foot brake, the slack in the drive train causes a slight movement.

The e9*s have a separate drum brake for the handbrake.

If you look at the rear wheels you will see the drum in the centre. Lots of people have complained that the outer surface of the drum gets rusty and unsightly.

I took my car in to the dealers about this issue.

I was informed it's a form of "Hill start assist".

When you put the hand brake on whilst say at a set of lights on a hill the car will roll back of couple of cm and the rear breaks will lock onto the drums.

Then realise it when you are ready to pull away and the car will not roll back .

Try it,mine works fine.
