Wow. Sorry to hear that. They are real heavy on the parkways. Everyone I know who's gotten ticketed on one has gotten a lawyer and fought it to get it reduced. Cause let's face it, no one is doing less than twenty over on any highway ever.

Well it's almost thirty over and then factor in the surcharge on top of the fines. So Idk. You'd have to be the one to make that call. But if it was me I'd feel anything lower would be better. Less points and lower sir charge fees. Just my opinion. Go to the court before the appearance and speak w a couple of the lawyers that know the judges and ask em their advice. I've always heard the more you postpone it the better also.

What's the deal with postponing? How does that help?

I think the idea behind postponing is that hopefully when you get to court the officer who issued the ticket isn't, he couldn't keep track of all of your postponements, and the ticket is dismissed. OP, were you caught on radar or was he following you? I was pulled over on the NY thruway a couple of years ago doing 85. I asked a lawyer who told me that its almost impossible to beat or reduce a ticket if they have you on radar. That advice cost me $200.

Definitely delay and hire a lawyer, figure $500-1000 for a lawyer. A few people on here are good with recommendations for a lawyer, I'm sure they'll chime in.

I think for most people its more about getting no points then getting fines.

I'm definitely not interested in paYing $200.00 for someone to tell me I'm boned.

i suggest lawyer up. should be around 500. if you've had a clean record for over 30 years, they should be able to plea it down to non speed so it will not affect your insurance rates. 21-30 mph over is 6 points which will incur a 300 dollar "assessment fee" to the DMV.

postponing can do as they say where the officer will give up. but also in the case of points, they are on your record for 18 months. delaying a conviction for about a year kind of gets around that. since you are not convicted of have plead guilty, they cannot tack the points onto your license until you are convicted. so if you delay it a year, you will only have points for 6 months, but the record of the conviction stays for 3 years.

i only know this because i spoke to an attorney recently for a speeding ticket in armonk. he was able to reduce my ticket to 2 point non speed (obstucting traffic at intersection) from 83 in a 65. He stated that he would have been able to get me off if i had a squeeky clean record (had a tailgating ticket back in 2012 that was still on my official record)

I got 86 in 55 on the ssp in Nassau, went with no lawyer, got it reduced, and only had to pay $400. My first ticket on record so im not sure if they just gave me a break or not.

Did the cop clock you or was it radar? Someone said they won't reduce radar tics. I'm wondering if that's true.

If you have a clean record it is definitely worth getting an attorney. I am an attorney. I do not do these types of cases, but I appeared for my fiancee and her sister for their tickets. I was able to knock down a 83 in a 55 to a ~$700 parking ticket and a 73 in a 55 to a ~$400 parking ticket.

If you get slammed with that speeding ticket you are looking at $400+ with the fines and the unsafe driver assessment anyway, not to mention your insurance premium may go up.

The advice about delaying is only good if you actually plan on going to trial. In suffolk county you negotiate with the ADAs at the very outset and they don't even know if the officer will be available to testify at your trial. It is possible that if you reject the first plea bargain and try to proceed to trial they will negotiate a better deal if the officer does not appear at the trial date, but you are playing with fire. If the officer appears you are 99.99% guaranteed to lose and if he appears you will run the risk of not being able to plea out. The whole reason they do plea bargains is so they don't have to waste officer time doing stupid traffic ticket trials. If the officer takes the time out of his day to come down to court, you aren't going to get a deal from the ADA, they will just prosecute and win.
