When you start the car, it will tell you on the instrument panel when the next scheduled service is due. Or, you might have to find it in the iDrive, if you don't have Navigation with extended screen instrument panel.

W/ no nav, upon startup, the lil screen in the middle of the instr cluster will display how many miles until the next service. A message will come up at that time when service is due.

If you own the car, and want to keep it for many years, take the iDrive oil change number and divide it in half. It will be cheap insurance to make sure your car's engine is always properly lubricated with clean oil.

In my e92, the idrive would also give indications when the air filter/cabin filter should be changed, is this not the case in the F3x?

Oil changes are covered either by mileage or every 12 months. Brake fluid and micro filters every 2 years. Everything else is condition based meaning the car calls for different services as it needs it. BMW will not cover any maintenance item until it's due. No 10k mile service or any service interval based on mileage alone.

Your first oil change will likely be 10K miles. That's a sort of break in oil. From then on, likely 12-15K. It really depends not only on mileage, but how you drive. My car does around 12K for the notice to pop up. I also have lots of city miles.

With the excellent synthetic Castrol Edge used at the dealer, changing the oil every 10K is really wasting money. Some guys swear buy it, but that's usually based off of the old oil mix philosophy.

Only difference is if you regularly track your car; which I don't recommend with a lease.

From my understanding I thought I don't have to pay for the service and maintenance?

BMW no longer uses Castrol. They switched worldwide to Shell GTL oil from 01 January 2015

Do you mean that Shell Helix Ultra that's made from natural gas? Didn't think that was a synthetic.

Can anyone else shed light?

Yeah some guys still change oil every 5k miles as a precaution. (due to way of thinking with older cars)

Whether or not that really does anything to improve the life...who knows?

But yeap, our cars have come a long way and the car's computer will tell you when it is due for service

By definition, if it's not a refined petroleum product, it's synthetic.
