ConnectedDrive UPD01008 Help Needed
Hi folks,
I just bought a used 2011 335is convertible (E93), that looks like none of the previous owners ever updated the navigation, nor the I-Drive software. Last night, I tried doing the latter based on BMW's instructions, but I could not get the update to work. I keep getting a "software on usb device is incompatible with this vehicle" error when trying to update. I thought this was kinda weird, since BMW gave me this software after putting in my VIN on their site. So, after some reading on this forum, it looks like I might have found my problem and I'd like it if y'all could verify for me and offer me some help. Here's the details on my car build: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_E...ew?usp=sharing Based on this, it looks like my car build date was September 2010 and I have the needed hardware for ConnectedDrive. Even though this is the case, the vehicle shows BMW Assist in the I-Drive menu instead of ConnectedDrive. My assumption is the original dealer forgot to code it in when they switched over. So here's where I'm at... If I read everything correctly, I should be able to add ConnectedDrive in myself, as long as I get a diagnostic cable and software correct? Will I need an FSC code? If so, what would be the best way to get one? Once I add in ConnectedDrive, will I then be able to update to the latest software? |

The update is to deal with the software of the combox module. Not the Idrive Software. You possibly could try coding for BMW APPS to see if it will work if not you will need an FSC.
The update that you are using needs to be plugged into the USB port in the armrest for it to work as well.

Yes, I know the update had to be done through the armrest. I tried troubleshooting for about an hour before I gave up. I also tried all the previous updates to see if any would work, and I got the same error message for all the updates.
That's why I thought that my system thought the updates were incompatible because I didn't have ConnectedDrive activated. I know I should be able to activate ConnectedDrive without activating BMW Apps. I use Android, so I'm assuming it would be pointless to get BMW Apps right? |

When was your car manufactured? Probably October / November 2010. Is your software version not listed on the bmw site? I think it starts with 2.xx etc? If so, mine had same issue. The only fix is to update entire car.

It was manufactured in September 2010.
Here's a pic of the software versions: By "update the whole car" what do you mean? |

Anyone figure this out? I'm having a similar problem and cannot find a solid answer anywhere.
I typed in my VIN and got the update from the bmw.com website. I'm using the armrest USB and it is reading it, because before I put in the USB it says "no USB detected", and after I put in the USB stick it says "software detected is not compatible" (or something to that effect). Current Software: MX-002.005.025 This seems pretty old? Is there an older update I need before this one? Thanks!

Hey BrundenBak ,
I was able to get this figured out, but it took a LOT of work. To put it simply, I had to get a hold of an ICOM system and update the TEL and MEDIA firmware through ISTA/P to something at least somewhat recent. Once I did that, the USB armrest updates started working. I also enabled ConnectedDrive while I was at it, but I don't think that really mattered. If you are able to find someone you can borrow an ICOM system from, or are willing to buy it, I can help you with the rest of the procedure. Also, if your dealership isn't incompetent, they should be able to update your car's firmware for you. The service charge would probably be in the ballpark of $200-$300.

Thanks, what a pain. Is it worth it? Is there anything functional that changes?

I will throw in my 5c:
I had the same problem with my '2011. The firmware downloaded from the local site did not work, however FW downloaded directly from BMW.com worked like a charm. |

I'm not sure if I'd say it's worth it for most people. I couldn't really notice any difference in my bluetooth or telephone connection with the car, but then again, I have a Nexus 6, which is not listed on BMW's site as being fully supported. If you have one of the fully supported phones, especially an iPhone, it might be worth it. I'm also one of those guys who always wants the latest and greatest updates for whatever I have, so it made me feel good to know I was updated.
One thing to consider, if your CIC is showing that old firmware for your TEL/MEDIA, it's extremely possible that your dealership has never updated any of the other ECU modules on your car as well. When I updated my TEL/MEDIA through ISTA/P, I also went ahead and updated every other module on my car too, and it made a HUGE difference on my day-to-day driving. I noticed smoother shifts and downshifts, better pedal response, and just overall a better driving experience.

I went and downloaded the PDF for UPD01008 http://www.bmw.com/_common/shared/ow...D01008_ENG.pdf
It says among other things it provides improved "display of album and track" information. Could this explain why the F10 I rented last week in Florida showed album and track info from the SiriusXM app I was streaming but my 2011 e92 does not? |

I'm having the exact same issue with my 2011 328. Bringing it into the dealership next week and hoping they'll update the firmware under warranty. If not, I'd be interested in more information about how you fixed it.

Let me know what happens at the dealer. Do you have your car coded? Would be interested to know if the firmware update works and also whether it affects existing coding.

A firmware update will cause coding to be reset to default, whether you do it yourself or not.
