Floor Mat: Velcro Felt Circles Peeling Off
For whatever reason, BMW uses velcro to attach the carpet floor mats to the carpet. After just 4 months of use, the 2 round felt pieces on the bottom of the floor mats have peeled off. When I called the dealer about it he said "unfortunately it's a common problem, just come in and we'll replace them".
Has anyone else noticed this? I'm wondering my BMW doesn't use the hole and hook method that most other cars use, especially in light of Toyota's recent accelerator issues tied to sliding floor mats. |

Yes, bad velcro adhesive on cheap floormats...but that's what happens when people demand that things come free with the car.
The $140 mats I had to negotiate into the deal on my 2004 E46 were thick (and the rears were not 1/4 the quality of the fronts) - sad. I will bitch about this issue on my next service. |

It doesn't seem like it would have cost them any more to put holes in the floor mat and replace the velcro circles in the carpet with hooks. Everyone else does it this way.

I had a look at the floor mats in the loaner 320i that I have from the dealer, and the velocro dots (which are huge) are:
1. Tied or strapped to the floor (kinda like a cable tie kinda thing?) 2. Stuck to the floor mat section, and then covered with like a plastic kinda film and stitched. They aren't coming off in a hurry. |

My car is 2+ years old with 30k miles and weekly car washes where the mats go into that giant grinder of death to bang all the dirt out, still no issues with the velcro pads coming off.
The same machine took the embroidered "TL badges" off my Acura floor mats in about 18 months.

I think the hot summer weather actually melts the adhesive used to secure the round felt pads to the bottom of the mats. The dealer mentioned that it was a fairly common problem. |

Thanks for the useful info. Do you know what date you received the "updated" version? I took delivery of mine on 6/29/14 but it was an April 2014 build.

Mine was delivered on 22/04/2014 and it had the new mat already, also just picked my new(again) car last week and has the same new mat so I'm surprised you didn't get it.

I think they don't use hooks for design reasons. Atleast that would be my guess. It looks a lot better without them.
Personally I just don't like that these don't say BMW on them like they did in the E90.

I just looked at my new car's mats (just delivered today) and they're different again... almost like all one piece. No stitching. No stickiness etc. Interesting. Can take a photo if anyone is interested.

Dealer gave me two sets from the get go. one on the floor and one sealed in the trunk. might have been a mistake but works good for me. Have one to get dirty and one to replace for when we have company riding with us.

I bought the mats after and the glue for the felt pad is weak. I have one pad that has separated. It's not a huge issue but when I pull them out to clean, I forget and get glue all on my fingers. The actual mat I'm happy with though.

Thankfully, I'm not driving a Toyota. I've been driving for over 50 years now and not once, not ever have I had a "loose" floor mat cause me any kind of problem. I suppose it's a matter of having mastered how to operate a motor vehicle - not everyone is capable.

Is anyone else's like mine? Pull up the mat and there's a circle of velcro on plastic. Twist the plastic 90 degrees(either direction) and the plastic should come out of the floor

Mine's not peeling at all. Velcro is velcro...every once in awhile in a mass-production product you'll get a defect or two. Not everyone's complaining about loos floor mats.

I used to detail cars at a BMW dealer and saw this often on lease returns and other cars beyond 3 years old. Not so much on newer cars of course. I'd suggest being a little more careful when pulling them out for cleaning, as this is when all that stress is going to potentially start a tear between the velcro and the mat.
I agree that the VW-type design (plastic post in the vehicle carpet, plastic receiver hole in the mat) might be better for short-term wear, but maybe there's something to be said for the aesthetic of not having plastic there. Plus if you beat up on any design it's going to eventually give out, remember we're talking about carpet. |
