Rear ended - mtec time for mtec bumper?

Hello guys,

I got rear ended the other night, an old man forgot to keep his foot on the brake at the light. No big damage, but I'll probably need a new rear bumper. Can't see it well on the picture but it's pushed in pretty good.

Question: How much more will it cost if I ask the body shop to replace my standard rear bumper cover with an mtec rear bumper cover?

Thanks,

Bonus video...

Per Tischer BMW, $635 ($928 retail) for the M-tech.

Thanks for the response, but they aren't going to make me pay for the whole bumper out of pocket, but only the difference in price between the regular bumper and the mtec? I want to know what the difference is roughly.

If you go through the responsible party's insurance, they will cut you a check for the cost to repair/replace the bumper. You should have the option to repair at a facility of your choosing where you will pay the difference for the mtech bumper. When the adjuster comes to estimate your car, make sure you insist on OEM parts and ask what steps would be taken should the shop you choose find damage not visible/behind the bumper.

They should only charge you the difference. If you get an aftermarket M-Tech bumper, it shouldn't cost more than an OEM regular bumper.

+1
but the Mtech bumper from a reputable website will cost far less (no more than $500 total) than the oem bumper and still be the same quality. I believe it's actually the same manufacturer. The key is to get the estimates for oem parts, then get the check from insurance company based on those estimates. You'll have money left over.

That's pretty cool you keep your camera rolling for incidents like this and also cool that you can choose a rear bumper replacement. I hear most insurance companies just replace it with the OEM bumper you already had on it.

Get an aggressive price quote, have the insurance send you the check, buy an mtech rep.

Profit.

I would guess around $1k too. Someone backed into my front bumper and it was $1,400 for a new one along with some trim. (Yes I realize the front may be more expensive, but just for reference.) I have the M-Sport package.

Most replacements (M-Sport or Non M-Sport) you are going to get will be aftermarket - unless you explicitly state that you want OEM. Then you will need to pay the difference as the insurance company will seldom pay for an original part if they are able to get a rep.

Same goes for M-Sport, OEM M-Sport bumper will be more expensive. You could just get a replica M-Sport but you most likely will have to pay the difference in that as well.

The reason I know this is because I had my rear bumper replaced due to accident before as well. My Rep Non M-Sport bumper was around 400-500 while the rep M-Sport is around 800. I would have to pay an extra 400-500 to get the Replica M-Sport. I just decided to go with the regular.

This is the way to go, unless the insurance company counter offers you (which is highly likely)

They may try to repair that (versus a replacement). Did you file thru the other guys insurance or thru your own? Are they having you take it to a "preferred" shop of theirs?

I know a little about the insurance industry so let me know if you have any questions

I'm going thru the other guy's insurance and they want me to go thru their preferred shop. Can I pick my own shop instead?

I agree! The damage isn't that bad. They may be able to pop that out. I wouldn't get my hopes up since his insurance is footing the bill.

I think the insurance company will repair that rather than replace. From the pic the damage looks minimal. I have had worse damage that was repaired and not replaced. Hopefully it will all work out for you.

Lol!

I'm at the body shop right now, looks like they'll be able to put an m-sport bumper cover on (from ECS tuning), at no additional cost... SWEET!!!
