ISP Throttling
So I have a virgin 4 meg connection.
...and I have been known to download the odd video file etc. According to my records my download stands at 1.3 Terabytes and my upload at just under 700Gig As such I seem to be experiencing throttling in the evening from about 6pm till the morning. My connection is reduced to 1meg down and 0.1 meg up To cap this off my router decides to drop connection after a certain amount of time or data downloaded, I'm not sure... So I'm a little annoyed now... Should I complain... and risk discussion of my supposed excessive usage etc ? SJ |

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html...t/traffic.html The thresholds seem incredibly low ... 300MB of downloads on the M package. This is why I'm sticking with Be Unlimited (www.bethere.co.uk) as they are pretty definite that their service really is unlimited with no traffic shaping of any kind. |

+ 1 to what NFS has said.
My daughter is with Virgin and she suffers the same. I don't think it's just your supposed excessive use James,it's a Virgin policy. I'm with BT and their very tolerant of excessive downloading (NOT porn by the way).

Try updating your router firmware, some routers have these types of issues a f/w upgrade sometimes solves them.

300MB is nothing really. A decent quality DVD rip is usually 2 x 720MB and a game like Crysis is more like 8 gig. |

the router is the original NTL Cable modem.
Not sure I can upgrade anything on it. It is circa 2002, so maybe it's just come to the end of it's life. Symptom is that it just drops connection. A quick power off and on and it's back in 20 seconds. Very annoying. I'm actually thinking of getting a plug in timer that turns it off for 15 minutes every 2 hours or something... Of course i could just ring Virgin technical support >... If it's the same people who gave me 4 new TV boxes before one would actually work longer than 24 hours, I'm not holding any high hopes SJ |

I'm paying £18 a month for up to 24 meg (although I only get 13 meg). I downloaded about 6 gigs last night ... all at full tilt .. The only problem is my rapidshare limit. |

I was looking for a DVD player which will play HD Divx files - any ideas? Or any other way to play back images from a PC in one room onto a TV in another (without stringing a 20m HDMI cable between the 2). |

To stream Hi Def you will need a wired connection or one of those power line adaptors.
You say play back images? You mean video?

I've downloaded some HD films at higher resolutions, which I can play on my monitor (1680x1050) and I would like to find a way of playing them through my TV. HD DVD players don't seem to play DivX HD and I don't want to have to convert my downloaded films into another format. The only options I can come up with are: 1. Put a media centre style PC in the living room capable of outputting at 1080p and network it with my main PC - not really an option. 2. Connect my TV to the second output from my PC's graphics card via HDMI cable - difficult because they are in different rooms. 3. Get a media play like the Snazio Home Cinema HD and connect it to my network wirelessly - good in theory, but the reviews of the Snazio suggest a lot of people are having some difficulty setting it up. http://www.snazio.com/ Any other ideas? |

Not really mate, I use option 1.
Will post on here if I see any product that will do what you're after though.

I too, use option 1...
means I can be a little social when browsing the web, otherwise I'd be in one room and everyone else in another ! SJ |

I tend to go for slightly worse quality and stream the video through the XBOX360.
On the ISP issue, I got an email from BT about thier fair usage policy they are charging me another £50 because i downloaded too much stuff! Time to change to sky |

It upscales to 1080p your SD sources brialliantly too an it only costs about £120. I watched The Bourne Ultimatum in 720p DTS the other night and it was awesome.

I'm on Virgin's XL, and on the whole it's been fine. I did realise a month or two ago that I only ever got 13Meg. So I gave them a call, and once I'd got through to Swansea (a bit random, it seems about 50/50 whether you'll get Swansea or somewhere east of europe) my speed suddenly jumped up to 19.8Meg, even though they said there was "nothing wrong". Still, I moaned and got the £5 call charge back.
What I've never quite got to the bottom off, is where do people download this content from?
