Is anyone using Castrol Edge Syntec 15W40?
Hi,
I recently discovered that Castrol now has the Edge Syntec 15W40 with BMW LL-01 approval. I was unaware that it has been around for a while now. Anyways, currently I am using the Syntec European formula 0W30 and use to use the 0W40 from Mobil 1. So I wanted to get some feedback on it for using it year round especially for here in Canada. I searched this sub-forum but no info came up. Any feedback would be appreciated. |

Any particular reason to try the 15w40? If I were up in Canada, I personally would prefer the zero weight oil--flows better cold and thus minimizes cold-starting engine wear.
Hell, I'm on Long Island, which has pretty moderate winters compared to Toronto, and I would stick with the zero weight Mobil. All that said, I usually let my dealership do it (got tired over the years wrenching on my own cars, so I just don't bother any more), and I'm pretty sure they use a 15 weight. I do have a case of the Mobile 0w40 for top-ups though.

Now is a good time to get Castrol 0W30, CT has it on sale! Every year around this time I change my oil to 0W30 and I've never had an issue starting,no block heater and I live where the temp gets down to -40 Celsius! That's a far cry from what your temps are in TO so I'm sure it will serve you well.

I just realized I had huge typo in my threads. I meant to type 5W40. Anyhow, thanks for the tutorial. I certainly get the picture now. I can go with 5W40 as it covers the same low temp range as 0W30. Toronto never sees anything below 30C.
