335IS vs M3
how much different in power is the 335IS vs the M3?.. Ive heard that the 335IS beats the M3 off the line every time. According to speed times, the 335IS has a 0-60 of 4.5 seconds, and the M3 has a 0-60 of 4.1... In terms of 1/4 mile times, the M3 has a time of 12.9, and the 335IS is 13.0... According to a friend of mine, these speed times are more for dealers to sales pitch the car... From what ive read, the 335IS seems like it can keep up with the M3.. Does anyone have any actual insight on this topic?

M3 0-60 is more like 4.4. Maybe the sedan can run a 4.1. Stock vs stock would be a really close race in a straight line. Once you tune your IS, especially with e85, you'll beat the M3 no doubt. The M3 would shine over the IS on the track though.

The m3 has about 90 more hp but about 50 less tq. Off the line the is might be a little quicker but the m3 would win in a high speed long distance type race. The m3 is not a drag car.
Any 335 can be made to beat a m3 in a straight line for about $1000 but the m3 is far better on a road course and a 335 will never have thst v8 sound. |

My sisters Boy friend has an M3 (e90), i beat him to 60 every time, at 100 where back to being neck and neck and usually we back off around that speed. Although mine has some modifications its most likely not much faster then an 335IS.
I raced my buddys 2014 mustang (track pack), to 60 i was a half car length. He couldn't pull a head till after 100MPH. (same as the M3 basically, Horse power on the mustang was 450 with the trackpack key in use.) and last I race a random M3 (e90) on the freeway couldnt get a real good gauge at how much he was pushing it because traffic hindered us from going full out. that being said even rolling ont he highway he really didnt pull away at all. if anything i felt I may have been faster. |

M3 will always be top of the line. It's not a drag car but it will beat the 335is. And on a track it will murder a 335 even tuned. People have to understand the perks of having a v8 is that the engine just wants to go, this vs comparison it's old and it was already beat to death. M3 is the king of the 3 series. Track that car all day and after go get your groceries.

What do you think about this ? I think the tuned 335i was conservatively tuned at only 405 HP, with the JB4 and a CAI your getting close to 420 are you not ? |

Get the m3. The 335is is good, but the v8... No comparison

Yawn.
Buy an M3, you will spend more trying to make a 335 an equiv. car. There is more to an M car than the engine.

With the right person that knows how to drive an M3, the 335is has no chance. I have seen an M3 at the drag strip with someone who knows how to drive it and it went 7.80s. My 335i 8.79. No comparison. 1/8 mile.

I essentially owned both
N54 335i with PPK and PE (very similar to the iS) S65 M3 In lower speeds 30-70 the 335i was a lot of fun and very quick without any effort. Any type of highway speeds and the M3 is just a howler, it pulls hard up top and does not wince at triple digits. The 335i runs out of steam in comparison. I actually really like the N54... It is the chassis of the M3 that sold me, it feels worlds apart. |

335is (N54B30TO) vs 335i (N54B30) absolutely two different animals especially since the 335is is optional with DCT which is the same in the M3

Plus most 335i's these days have epic turbo lag due to the software updates from bmw trying to stop wastegate rattle a couple of years back. You have to request a wastegate retrofit from the dealer who likely doesn't know what it is to get it back to the 300TQ@ 1800RPM.
Are you tracking? M3 Do you care about an LSD ? M3 Do you want better fuel economy, lower insurance premiums, and taxes, while putting some money into modifying the 335i with tunes, m3 suspension bits & more + LSD with great low end torque for city driving (quite possibly increasing repair bills as well) ? 335i. Most comparable M3s are still $15-20k more than a 335i. IMO the headache of modding might not be worth it, factory engineered has a peace of mind. Plus shops or people that understand the engineering tid-bits of custom suspension work is difficult to find. You can place 80% of M3 suspension bits directly onto a 335i, if I'm remembering correctly. *Edit* sorry just noticed you said 335is, most of this still applies the IS does have a DCT though. Not sure much that matters when compared to everything else the M3 has. |

Great question... I decided for the 335is... My retired 335i N55 was pulling pretty hard on the e9x M3 @ 40 and 60mph.
I couldn't justify spending 10k more and ultimately having a slower street car... Conversely the M3 has many refinements and overall drivability that is superior to the non "M" which may justify its cost... Difficult question to answer, both are great cars.

I didn't buy my M3 to race 335is or any other cars for that matter...I don't need to beat some other guy to feel good about my car, my ego, my manhood or whatever the reason...I DID buy my car because I love the way it growls when I start it up...the way it responds when I open it up and the way it wants to run and then get some groceries on the way home... Drive one, and if you aren't hooked, it's OK...the car will find someone else that loves it and it wont be hard to find that person |

60', 1/8 and 1/4 mile times (plus trap speeds) will give a real indication of how a car performs in a straight line. |

Please explain?? I was under the impression all 335is (2011-2013) had the N54B30. To my knowledge, only the 1M coupe and Z4 35is came with the more powerful N54B30TO
