MPG versus Oil Temperature Gauge
I just ordered a 2008 335xi sedan which should arrive the week of Feb. 18th. Includes premium package, Cold Weather, 6 speed manual, Sirius and factory installed iPod adapter. No i-drive/NAV or sports package.
When test driving I noticed some sedans had a temp gauge in place of the MPG gauge. Given my configuation, does anyone know what I can expect in my car? Does anyone know if BMW is shipping 335xi's with the oil cooler standard now, or do you have to gripe with the dealer post delivery? Finally, anyone know where I can find the radio manual (I have Logic7) for some pre-reading ahead of delivery? Thanks. |

All 335s have the oil temp gauge. As to the OPs question, I think, no sport package means no oil cooler.

REALLY!? That makes no sense about the 328...I'm shocked. I mean, the car tells you either via the dash, or i-drive screen if you have it, what your MPG is, either current or trip. Makes zero sense to have a redundantly redundant guage like that.

Thanks all. I pprefer the oil temp gauge. My 2005 325xi had both - if I lose one, I'd rather lose the MPG gauge. Average mileage can be called up on the computer anyways.
Anyone know if the radio manual is available online? |

Is the 328 oil or coolant?

I am sure your 325xi has a water temp gauge instead of a oil temp gauge. On E46 models only the M3 has the oil temp gauge.

Hehe, I guess I'm the only one, but I like the instantaneous MPG gauge. A temp gauge will tell you when the engine is warmed up or if it's too hot. Otherwise it just sits there and bores you. At least the MPG gauge moves. You may not care about fuel economy, but it's not like it's hurting you. I think it's cool to watch it on hills. Yes, I'm a geek. Sue me.
BTW, you can tell if your engine is warmed up by doing an oil check. If it gives you a reading, it means the engine is warmed up. If it just shows a ticking clock, it means it's not. -Dan

My 2008 325 has oil temperature gauge, no coolant gauge. The fuel economy is displayed digitally.

All these gauges are just for entertainment. As such, the instantaneous MPG gauge is more entertaining because it reflects what you do in driving.

I disagree. The oil temp gauge lets you know when your engine has reached peak operating temp, for those that go easy on the accelerator before that time. The MPG gauge is useless.

335Xi only gets the oil cooler if you get the sport package AND the 18" wheel option. Seems silly to me but evidently getting the 18" wheels means you will drive it harder according to BMW and need the oil cooler. Enjoy the car and only 65 more days until I get mine via PD

You can get all the warm-up information you need from the clock. Did I argue that the MPG gauge was useful? I don't recall that I did. I said it was entertaining.

MPG gauge - Changes dynamically from moment to moment based on throttle position and RPMs. It's entertaining and works better as a gauge because it changes often and rapidly. -Dan

I hear ya Dan...it's just that it seems easier to read a gauge that's in plain view rather than to hit a button on the OBC....you know us 6MT guys, we only have 2 hands and when they're not at 3 & 6, we're shifting with one of them.....

Oh balls. Why the hell do I need to know the second my engine has reached its peak operating tempature? I never get above 50 mph on the way to work anyway. Besides it is easy enough to learn about how long it takes your car to warm up at any certain time of year. I had an oil temp gauge in my last car and it was pretty usless. I find myself using the MPG gauge quite a bit. Of course I don't have turbos either.

do the 2008s all come with temp gauges regardless of model? Also, how do you have a 2008 325? Are you in Europe?
