power steering pump

Okay guys dropped my ride off at my indy yesterday they called a few minutes ago…power steering pump is going bad. They quoted me about $1K for replacement. They did mention this is for an OEM pump as their aftermarket supplier has them on backorder.

I can save about $200 if i get an aftermarket one but it will be almost a month before they can get it.

So…for those of you that have had this repair done is that reasonable? I looked and getting all the parts (pump, hoses, etc.) will cost me several hundred dollars so I'm trying to decide if this is something I want to DIY or not.

Also, they said my OFHG is leaking but I'm definitely going to do that myself.

thanks for your input

What are the symptoms? Power steering pumps "going bad" usually just means that they are making noise, kind of a whining sound. That can go on for years and the pump still pumps find.

Just curious.

Yes it was making a very bad whirring noise that was getting worse over time. Fluid was low & filling it up made the noise go away but only temporarily.

If you can do a OFHG change, you can easily do the PS pump. Just saying.

Did anyone flush the system? I suggest first and foremost doing that. When you do that do the OFHG at the same time. You would be money ahead to do so. What I know about BMW pumps is that they will get contaminated by metal particles and you can get so much more life out of the pump changing the fluid out. Pretty easy to do, crack a bolt that holds one of hoses on. Front wheels jacked up turn wheels back and forth engine off to drain all the fluid. Tighten the bolt and refill the system move the wheels back and forth then drain again.
Refill and purge the air out again moving the steering wheel back and forth.
You might get by with extending the life of the pump....

If you change the fluid, change the reservoir. There is a filter built that is part of it.

How do you purge the air?
