Debadging

Quick question. I'm considering debadging the 328 on the trunk. I've had the car a while but I just want to make the rear look cleaner. Im concerned it'll leave behind the residue of the glue used to stick the numbers on from the factory. Car has 81,000 miles and has been garage kept its whole life. So my question is, if it does leave behind that residue, do any of you know a way to get that off? For example like goo gone or something?

Thanks

Goo gone will do the trick.

From experience even after applying goo gone you will still see the residue left behind in certain angles reflecting off the sun. I recommend using a clay bar and detail to remove it completely.

I just removed mine a couple weeks ago. Use floss and a blow dryer and it comes right off. I was able to rub my thumb over it and 90% of the glue came off. The rest came off with a little bit of 409.

Make sure you have some rubbing compound to go over it with a few times or you will see a shadow.

Do you think the car being in a garage all its life will be a factor to it coming off easier?

+1, I did this a while ago and I used the same format, theres plenty of youtube videos on this but remember to always spread the heat evenly or you'll bubble your paint.

Also when you use goo-gone or w/e product at the end to get the rest of the residue out remember to wash it completely off the car. Depending on the results you may not need a clay bar, when I did it, you could see an outline of the badge but that's if you're like an inch from my trunk.

I don't think it will make a difference, the blowdryer and floss or fishing line will work either way.

I debadged mine 2 months ago using the above method. I also used Goo Gone: Automotive, picked up from a local O'Reilly Auto Parts shop. It won't harm your car paint. With about 30 minutes of scrubbing with a microfiber towel, the residue was gone.

I had to buff the area to get rid of the outline of the numbers. There was no adhesive remaining yet you could still see the outline in the clear coat. Buffing took that away and you cannot tell they were ever there.

Dental floss, goo gone and some quick detailing spray and you won't see anything.

My badge came off easily. I used some goo gone and polished her up. Looks like nothing was there before.

i have an apline white 328xi and all the lettering came off with a blowdryer and dental floss. i would suggest spraying the letters with goo good before starting so the edges of the letters soak in some of the goo gone. i debadged it after 6 years and no residue left behind.

has anyone noticed discoloration? I mean from the car being exposed to the elements for the past 6-8 years then the paint under the badge being protected? Or is the paint fairly resistant to fading?

I use snowboard wax and dirt remover, works way better than goo gone. Although this might be an issue for those in the southern US.
