New 335i - Only one exhaust active
Collected my new 335i on the weekend. I have found after 100 miles that only one exhaust is working. The one on the right (UK car) is working which can be seen (soot) and felt (hot air). The one on the left is soot-free and no hot air is felt. Has someone shoved a banana up one pipe? Even after revving, there is no change.

Their is a valve in there that controls the exhaust. The one on the right is open all the time and the one on the left opens as needed.

When I start my car in the cold, about 35 degrees, I notice for the first 3minutes only right exhaust works. After about 3 minutes, the car makes a different sound, I see both exhaust working. (I can see white smoke coming out from both exhaust because it's cold)

Search for "golf tee mod" if you want both sides always operational and more noise.

This has been discussed several times in the past. It is normal. If you want, there are a few ways to deactivate the valve so both sides are flowing all the time. Either with the "golf tee mod" or in the trunk on the driver's side, there is a small panel you can remove behind the tail light, revealing a sensor you can disconnect to keep the valve open at all times.

MODS: Can we put a sticky regarding the valve that controls the exhaust system, maybe with links to the golf tee mod(s)? Thanks.

Hell, we had a new thread on this started just a few days ago: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105206
Interestingly enough, the 330i has a similar valve in its right exhaust, so only the left side exhaust works until it is warmed up. The 325i did not have this exhaust valve, IIRC. Does the 328i?

If you read the thread above, that will answer all your questions. I just did the golf tee mod this weekend and it sounds louder, especially on a cold start. Great cheap mod!!! |
