Its not road noise as such, what could it be?

Hi all....I have an 08 E92 which has an annoying road noise type sound emanating from the front. I replaced the run flats with regular tires...still there.

I thought the sound seemed to alter when touching the brakes so I got the front discs re skimmed....noise still there!

Doesnt have the typical failed/failing front wheel bearing characteristics.. but I'm considering replacing both front wheel bearings?

The sound is kinda like marbles rotating in a tin can..kinda tinny...its not so much a drone. And its not so much a rattle either. Its not heard at idle and its quite quite at low speed ( like 5mph ) hit 30mph and its noticeable...hit 70 mph and its pretty loud! Its not like it gets faster as you go faster however..just gets louder.

Hard to explain? Anyone else have any experience with a similar problem?

Auto 335

Thanks ....Russ

If it doesn't change speed as you change speed, you can pretty much rule out anything that rotates. Beyond that, I have no idea, good luck.

I have a similar noise, especially when it gets colder outside. Then in spring/summer it goes away completely. I think it has something to do with the front differential on my xDrive. You don't specify if you have an xDrive...

wouldnt be cheaper to take it to a mechanic to have it checked out...

You already put in new tires ( 1500 $) , got the front disk reskimmed ( 200 $ maybe ??) and now you want to change front wheel bearings ( 300 , 400 $ ??)

You already spend 1500$ or more trying to fix a problem yourself and it is still there and you want to spend another 300 , 400 replacing the wheel bearings when they may still be ok

I think taking it down to a reputable shop to have it diagnose would be a lot cheaper and less stress full at this point. Unless you want to spend close to 2000 trying to fix it ..

I could suggeest a few more parts if you want ...

Just my 0.002 cents

Problem is, I did take it to a reputable shop and theyre just as baffled...We really thought it was the run flats..theyve driven it with me 2 times to try and get to the bottom of it....

Take the tires off and roll them. If there is something rotating in them then have them removed and fun out what it is. The installer could have left a rubber stem or the ball of the stem in the tire.

Could be a loose exhaust heat shield reverberating under the car?

Hi

Was making the sound before I changed tires thinking it was that.. I was going to swap out the runflats anyway so that wasnt money wasted.. But thanks for the reply
