Correct Cable for Coding?

Hey Guys,

I'm slowly getting geared up to code some features in my car once it gets here in a few days. First of all, I need to get the right cable - I believe it's called a D-CAN cable right?

Is this the right one?

Thanks,

Praz

I don't think so based on a few things: From the description:
"This Interface allows FULL diagnostic of BMW's build from 1998 - 2013"

And also, these cars use an Ethernet style network for component communication where you actually communicate over IP.

I used eBay and bought this cable and have had no issues.

Thanks nyeager! Wow ok, so it connects via ethernet not USB. Interesting - alright I'll give that one a shot.

I suspect we'll have to pick up the thunderbolt ethernet adapter for the macbook.

My other question is which software to use ...I've seen mention of E-Sys and NCS Expert ...is it an either or thing?

Ya, Thunderbolt to Ethernet or USB to Ethernet will both work, just make sure you configure your VM properly (bridge mode not NAT -- I believe) and things should 'just work.'

Got it - thanks! I actually have windows on my rMBP as well via bootcamp, so hopefully it'll be pretty straight forward.

Thank you! That reduces the amount of background reading to do
