what is butterfly valve for?

anyone know what is butterfly valve for? any reason? thanks if more info

keeps your left muffler closed on startup and as you drive at higher speed with engine temps increasing it will open up. if you look in the cold and start the car you will notice smoke is only comming through your right pipe.

also for noise purposes.

It depends on the context. A butterfly valve in a carburator restricts the flow of air into the venturi. As you open the throttle, more air gets in and therefore more fuel is drawn into the air/fuel mixture and the higher the engine revs.

Not sure if this thread was started because of "Valvetronic".. but in the N52 engine (325, 328, 330) the throttle butterfly is fully opened at all times, except in special circumstances or when Valvetronic fails. When you control the throttle, you are actually controlling the amount of valve lift thus controlling air flow. This technology is pioneered by BMW and was also recently implemented in the Infiniti's latest VQ Engines.
