Break-In driving style

How are you guys trying to drive, and actually driving, during break-in? Mix of city/highway? Avoid the freeways? Don't care? Redline? Does it matter?

I cannot imagine anyone having this car for 1200 miles and not driving it hard a certain percentage of the time....impossible

I think I got close to 5500RPM a few times and did a short drag race once.

Run M2 exclusively but not sure if settings make any diff. Keeping mine under 4500 till the 1200, it's bought and paid for so she's a keeper. Vary your RPMs they say but easier said then done over the full 1200 miles.

Went over 4500 RPM's a few times, let the car get to operating temp. before I had some fun. Mostly side street driving a few highway blasts. mIt's difficult to get to 1200 miles with side street driving only. Absolutely no foot down or stupid mustang racing.

FYI Dealer said 4500, ED Delivery Specialist at the Welt said 4500 till 250 miles (clutch break in) and then 5500 is totally fine.

4500 is very conservative. As long as your not pinging off the limiter every other time you take off you'll be fine.

If you can help it, don't go WOT (wide open throttle = foot pegged straight to the floor) for a few hundred miles regardless of what RPM you choose to consider your "personal break in limit." WOT likely induces considerably more pressure and stress then the 15% difference in actual RPMS.

But then again, its your car! Just be happy you don't have to break the damn thing in twice like I do . . . I had a "temporary ED" car since mine wasn't ready .

To reaffirm the above post, the break-in does not have to be religiously observed. Going over 4,500rpm or 105mph is fine a few times, the first is almost impossible not to do. See the procedure as a guideline rather than a hard and fast rule and avoid beating on the car (sliding, WOT, slamming on the brakes) until after your 1,200 mile service.

In fact, and not to further worry the OCD, M says that after the first service increasing the load on the car should be gradual until 2,500 miles iirc. Good luck with that

One last point, people (see post 2) who lease these cars are the reason why I avoid second hand high performance vehicles. In too many instances they are beat on from day one.

I leased but was gentle(r) for the first 1200 miles. I REALLY tried not to go over 4500, but know I hit 5200 at least once. Not going WOT was harder. Definitely failed at that. It was hard to whip out of a freeway onramp and jump on the throttle and then remember to shift early!

Yes, to much of that screw the next guy attitude. I almost bought a off lease M3 E92 vert. You could see with your eyes the previous owner just trashed the car with the "isn't mine don't care attitude". Not to mention what you couldn't see - redline with a cold engine, improper engine break in, gear grinding, figure eights and the rest of it. I know not all people do that, but far too many do. I don't trash my own property, let alone someone else.

Pretty sure all gloves are off after the 1200 miles, even for us anal retentive types.

This. I may or may not have laid down some 3rd gear rubber coming out of a toll booth or 5.

And then there are guys that are getting mid-11 quarters, saying it will be faster once launch control is activated at 1200 miles

drove the first 1300 miles on the highway at 90MPH the first day of ownership(bought out of state) and had a few 5500rpm runs and really stomped on it a few times..it was really hard not to nail it a few times on the drive home..the car begs for it and i dont see it hurting it at all..i just didnt hold redline for long.

Its in for its 1200 mile(1400 in my case) today...Will be testing launch control, take off with no traction control and 100MPH run tonight when i pick it up from the dealer.. maybe some on the way home! lol.

I met a dude in a C63 on my first night with Peter on the road. It was dark enough for me not to see any damage to the pavement.

Well I did, nothing over 4500, we took it on several day trips out in the country on 2 lane roads where we drove between 50 and 90 during the break in. It's had its 1200 mile service and been to 2 autocrosses so far. And everything is running perfect.

Everyone has an opinion on this. I have had low oil consumption on all my cars but I have no idea what a dyno would tell you.

I am forced to do a lot of highway driving to work during break in. I vary the rpms by running in different gears up to 4500-5000 rpm for a mile or two at a time. Sometimes I will run down to 60mph- then give half throttle up to 80-85 a few times to let the engine cylinder walls see a steady load.

I avoid trips where the engine doesn't get completely warm. Never lug the engine during break in. Have fun and good luck!

FWIW and I know there are always exceptions but after educated myself on proper ring seating and break-in theory, I followed no break-in on my brand new, 0 miles on pick-up e92 m3 and that engine was bullit proof to nearly 100k miles when I turned it in. Never a single engine problem. I was especially hard the first 100 miles. Not in Sustained redline but certainly hard loads up to 6500-7k rpms ( redline was 8400). I would let engine full warm up and then really get on the driving quite hard.

It literally burned ZERO oil with hard redline shifting driving for almost 100k miles in 3 years. I did oil changes every 7500 and great maintenance throughout but almost every person reported engine burning and I never had the problem.

So I personally never follow-break in anymore including on my f80

Sounds like we have the same approach.

I follow my own break in procedure to seat the rings properly, just like I have done on all of my fully built race engines.

My engines (whether they be factory built, or high performance workshop built) have always demonstrated magnificent compression test results
