Sorry to hear this Scooba,

If it's the Efficient Dynamics engine (assume so) it could be a similar problem to mine (allegedly just fixed by software update according to BMW UK). See:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97460

My warning light was the yellow engine management light, BTW.

Chris 5252 has experienced similar:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101878

So far only the 320i seems to have been suffering (all pretty new obviously), and some have been told the fix is spark plugs and injectors, some have been told it's software (me). Who knows?

Hope he gets it sorted, best wishes.

i had a 5 series and it had to go in because the RFT indicator kept telling me it had a puncture
got talking to one of the technicians who told me that sometimes they had to connect the car up to diagnostic machine to read all the hardware etc to determine the fault and this could take UP to two days as they had to just leave the system to do its thing because if they interrupted it it would shutdown

he sounded genuine enough
took the car in and got a call the same day to tell me it was sorted

sounds like a re-program...

those sheets of paper sound like a diagnostic dump.

You FIL could go back to garage to demand a copy of the paperwork as the information held by BMW is in relation to him and will most probably receorded onto the BMW database and should be available to him under data protection act. Probably a long shot but might relent the dealer to give you a copy.

I would have left the car with them and said I want a replacement car.

If it's that serious a problem then they really shouldn't be letting the car be driven. Given that thay are allowing this it's probably just a matter of changing something to a new spec that should cure some potential problem.

Additionally, as they need the car overnight they ought to supply a courtesy car, especially if they are only able to take it in a further two weeks.
