Flow Forged vs Forged (newbie)
Was going to use my OEM wheels for winter and then upgrade in summer, but then realized I quite like the OEM wheels and will use them in the summer.
So now i'm left to getting a wheel for winter - should i be getting a flow forged or forged? There is a price difference as you all know and I know the forged is stronger and somewhat lighter (depending on brand, etc), but is it really worth the extra cost for a winter set? Thanks. |

Forged is overkill IMO for a winter wheel. Lighter wheels matter to performance but in winter it isn't relevant unless you are tracking your car in the snow
A flow formed wheel is just a cast wheel but of higher quality. It is more than enough IMO. I will use any wheel (gravity cast, flow formed, etc) for the winter. In the summer, when performance and feel matter, I want a light wheel and that normally means forged. Winter wheels should be inexpensive wheels as the conditions beat them up regardless. Cast wheels are strong enough for winter use (although some will argue otherwise)... keep in mind that the vast majority of OEM wheels are cast and very few are forged. All of those cast wheels do just fine in winter. Find a quality cast wheel that you like and just save the money... VMR, Avant Garde, etc, etc...

They are forged. I can really feel the weight difference between the 19" OEM wheels and my 19" winter wheels. The winter wheels are noticeably heavier.

To expand on gThal's comment:
Flow-Formed wheels, like our VMR V810, (generally speaking) is a wheel with a cast face and a barrel treated in a way similar to that of a forged wheel. This is why many find Flow-Forming (cast+forged) to be an excellent balance of value+performance. The main difference in flow-forming/forged vs. cast is the ability to save weight while still retaining appropriate strength. If weight savings isn't TOO much a priority, you may be able to find a cast-constructed wheel to fit your needs just fine
