Cobb Tuning
So I may pick up a Cobb tuning kit off my friend for my 2009 E92 335i. My question before I buy it is, what are the harmful effects from it? I've heard stories like it locks up the computer in the car so when you take the car in for warranty work they tell you the computer locked up because of the tune and so we are voiding your warranty. All input is appreciated? Maybe should I look into JB4? let me know.
Thanks. |

If you are fairly stock and don't plan on going catless/upgrading intercooler that type of thing Cobb is great. They can etune with you to a safe spot on 91 octane that will out perform a jb4 on 91 octane setting by quite a bit...JB4 is great bc you can switch maps on the fly and use gauge hijacking also good support. If you plan on putting some bolt ons and running e85 jb4 stacked with Cobb is a cool thing that works very well.

If you're concerned about warranty then Cobb is probably a better choice since you can remove easier when you need to take car to the dealer.. Cobb is more liable, safer, and make equivalent if not more power than JB4..

As for the second part, you need to uninstall cobb before dealership visit or they migh catch you and void warranty. if you have cobb installed and you install another map from another cobb or another device; you old cobb is locked and cannot be used anymore (unless you pay 400$) the Cobb gets locked not the ECU

If you have over 25,000 miles get ready to change your spark plugs. Old spark plugs on a tuned vehicle will cause misfires.

I have the Cobb and have been very happy with the ability to remove with a minute. The JB products are used by many members and I have one on my E90. They take much more time to install and remove. The Cobb gave me a great performance gain. I was able to get a 4.4 0-60 on a completely stock car with old plus, coils, air filter etc.....I have since upgraded the car a bit and got a ProTune from Brentuning and the car has responded well. However the above comment is correct be prepared to at least put new plugs in and maybe even coils. Best of luck man

You should purchase a battery charger/tender for $60 to hookup to your battery while you initially install the tune, in case you have an old battery that can't hold charge. This is the only thing that can go wrong - the battery dies in the middle of the software install. Also, there are no problems that will result from the tune. If your plugs are old, this will be exposed sooner as a misfire, easy and cheap to replace them all from the get-go. All the other maintenance issues you will encounter will not have anything to do with being tuned, so no worries there lol!

Just make sure your buddy completely uninstalls it from his car and you'll be fine.

If you're going to be staying mostly stock, I'd recommend the Vishnu OpenFlash Tablet. I've had both the openflash, cobb and jb4 and the Openflash has better off the shelf maps than cobb IMO. The openflash run smoother and stronger from my experience with them.
But if you're going to be modding and are interested in doing custom tune in the future then I'd focus on cobb or jb4 |
