Info on Engine Stroker Kits for the 3.0L
Curious if anyone else has more info than the few articles that are out there. I've looked at Birds Tuning, Kelleners and Breyton. Kelleners numbers are the same as Birds so I wonder if they aren't both using the same components. Each offers a stroker kit that uses the stock piston bore of 85.0mm but but increases the stroke from 88.0 to 93.0 (those are Birds' numbers). I e-mailed Kevin Bird at Birds Tuning who was friendly and responsive. He mentioned pistons, crankshaft, rods, bearings and gaskets in the kit and did mention larger diameter valves possible and said something about camshafts too but I'm not clear if they offer a camshaft kit. Waiting to hear back on that.
The good: 40hp and 30lb-ft torque (over the stock 330i numbers). The bad: The conversion will cost you easily $20k. Birds kit is 8500 Euros ($12k+) for just the bottom end parts, no labor or machining. Kelleners is 11,500 Euro but may include everything since the Breyton 3.2 kit is 12,000 Euro ($18K!!!!!) for the entire conversion including tuning. That's a lot of dough! Wouldn't it be cheaper to swap the existing car for something like a 335i or Alpina B3 ??

at those prices, absolutely! That's really the only reason I posted. I was going to keep quiet about doing this conversion if I could have afforded it because I knew every response I got would have been, "get the 335i" had I posted that I wanted to do it. But at those prices it makes no sense.

it does make you wonder why companies create these mods though. I know Kevin at Birds very well, and I think he would be the first to suggest going to buy a better/bigger engined car rather than rebuild a mid-range engine.

That's what baffles me. why create the parts if they aren't priced to sell? I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, (again, the "just buy a 335i dude!" guys)but if I could have bought the kit for $3k-$4k from Birds and had it installed in a short block ($2.5k from the dealer) for another $1k-$2k I would have pulled the engine and done the work myself (rebuild several engines myself). This just doesn't make financial sense! And the parts can't be that expensive to manufacture!
I got my 325i for $25k so I figure if I could get 335i power keeping it all motor and do it for another $10k-$15k, then it would be a fun project.

And Kevin at Birds seemed to be a very nice guy and my post is in no way meant to imply these guys are in any way anything but top notch guys. I just don't understand. And yeah, the weak dollar makes this worse but it was 1.25:1 2 years ago and is 1.45:1 now. That's definitely not these Tuner's fault!!

I suppose the development of that products started before the 335i arived, when the 330i was the strongest beast. Now it's worthless, only a real NA engine fanatic / FI hater would invest such money. And money wise - Kevin is a really nice guy, I like Birds UK for lot of reasons except their prices. And they are Hartge dealers, so I guess it'sHartge stuff what they are offering. And the price of this kit can mean two things - the development was not cheap and it's not really a hot seller, or it's their way how to say "pls don't bother with such BS and get a 335i"

Frustrating because if it was reasonably priced, I'd be on it and have to believe so would others. Then again, I am finding that this is a whole new ballgame compared to the Mustang modifying community (the cars I have been driving and modifying for the last 10 yrs). Just a whole new mindset.
