Interior Peeling!?

I have noticed on both my 3 series and our X5 that the interior is peeling off!?

On the 3 series the drivers side door panel has that little change holder. I noticed that the black stuff started peeling in the inside of that change holder and now its the black plastic that shows..

On the X5 (its brand new!) i noticed it peeling on the steering wheel where the buttons are to control the music and phone feature.

Any one else had this problem on the interior of the car? A buddy of mine said it happend to his girl friends audi as well and they took it to the dealer and they fixed it for her free of charge. My brother has the same problem with his audi. I am going to try to take it to the dealer and see if they will fix it.. but I was wondering if anyone else had this problem? The X5 has not even had its first car wash so I dont think its due to any type of cleaning materials being used on it.

Oh yes...once you scratch it, it all peels off...
But it should be replaced by BMW warranty. I had the same issue with VW, but never fixed by their warranty...
I am waiting for the next oil change (May) to take it in and have them fix the rattles/bussing, peeling, steering column squeeking...all at once instead of going to the dealer every month...

I have never seen a used BMW that didn't have this problem. Don't know why they don't rethink the materials they use on the interior.....

There's even a TSB out on it. BMW says it's caused by certain hand creams or suntan lotion. Click on this link:

Yes, it happened to me a few times. Dealer replaced a driver side door panel at 6 months old and other 2 passeger door handles later too. After 2 years, the driver door panel start peeling off again. My car is at 46kmiles now, and I'll have the dealer change it again before the warranty expires. It only happens to gray/beige interiors.

I've read that the plastics are oil and acid sensitive so I've been cleaning any of the exposed plastics with a Ph neutral cleaner, like the meguiars leather cleaner, then using only water-based protectant, like the Pinnacle plastic protectant. So far, the plastic materials look great. YMMV depending on your skin/oil specifics and how often the plastic is cleaned, nothing worse for plastic/vinyl or leather than grinding dust/dirt.

When I bought my Audi there were a couple small spots that were starting to peel, but since i have owned the car (2 years, 30k miles) it hasn't gotten any worse. So I agree it must have something to do with the person (lotion, handcream, cleaners, etc.)

I have the same problem too but it's on steering wheel. NOT on the airbag or wheel but on the side below where all the buttons are.
