Auto-off option: bad for the turbo/engine?

Anyone that could educate me about this option?

I've been told that the option which the car turns off while on a stop, damages the turbo and the starter. Is this actually truth my friends?

To be honest I've been using the "eco-pro" mode while on heavy traffic and when in "comfort" I don't turn off the auto-off option.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

If it damaged the turbo and starter why would BMW have it as standard option on their vehicles?

While it may add a little more usage to the starter, I'm sure the unit is built to handle it. As for damaging the turbo, there's pretty much no chance of that happening.

That's exactly how I think! But lots of my friends who I think have more knowledge than I, keep saying that.

Thanks for sharing your opinion

Turbos are more worn from high heat and speed. Basically indestructible at ambient which is what a start is.

Auto start-stop WILL introduce increased wear to the engine. BMW has a warning highlighted in the manual.

Alex, I don't think the turbo is at risk but the starter and the extremely fragile ignition coils in our N55 may have shortened lifespans on long term start-stop use.

I think this type of system is being mandated in the near future to cut down on global emissions and such. Maybe around 2017 we will see something more concrete

As I said, I was using that feature while on heavy traffic. In my country, we do not have long freeways and traffic gets very ugly sometimes. I don't and will not drive in sport mode while driving 10-20mph

I'll keep using eco-pro on heavy traffic but won't be using the ASS anymore

Thanks all for your comments
