Engine oil level at a minimum?
The last 3 times I've shut the car off, I've received a minimal oil notice on the cluster and iDrive.. the car only has about 4k miles on it. What gives ?

Most likely oil sensor acting up. I had the same thing happen. Had to take it in, they removed it, cleaned it, replaced my oil and filter and put it all back together. It didn't really solve anything out, but there was a TSB on it I think, and that was the procedure. Every 4500 miles I had to put in one quart, which is not that bad. BMW considers excessive oil use if you need one quart every 750-1000 miles.

I had this once as well. Start by adding a quart and see what happens. I don't know if it b/c if the new engine or what but I know a few people who have come across this.
Adding a quart is a lot easier than having the sensor checked. Start easy and go from there. |

FWIW, I had no oil loss for 2500 miles. Then I got a low oil, and severe engine damage warning within 300 miles. It was Fri., 4PM, so I just added a quart. Since I was planning on a 3K oil change, I scheduled it, and asked that they check the quantity when it was drained. Sonnen charged me for the oil change, and BMW to check quantity. They "claimed" that I was not over filled. So where did that quart go in 300 miles???

i have 10K miles on mine and i just started getting the low oil warnings. When i turn off the car it usually right below min and tells me to add a quart however, when i start the car after a day it is back to normal.. right in the middle... I understand that colder car will show more oil but my concern is that i don't want to over fill it by adding a quart.. I guess i can try adding 1/2. Does it make sense?

I recently had my oil sensor report the wrong oil level, so I took it into the shop.
Turns out there is a TSB(TIS) or whatever its called, it says something about moisture getting in the oil sensor and ths making it give bad readings. There are like 10 steps to the procedure, maybe Ill scan it and post it here if I get a chance. There is a fix in the latest progman for this.

It is normal to burn some oil in new bmw engines. Just top it off and you will be fine. It should stop burning oil after 10,000 Kms. I had to top it off once at around 5,000kms... This also happened to me with my previous e46 when i was new...

Was it just my dealer, or a BMW thing in general, to include the extra quart of BMW oil (in a spiffy case that velcros to the side of the trunk carpet)? The dealer flat out told me "you'll probably need to add this before your first oil change at 15k miles. It's normal."

well if you drove the car hard it would happen...also it is a brand new car so it is gonna take up a lil more oil!!! it is telling you before you fill up the tank again to go have it topped off...every mag on the planet says to do a 1200 miles oil change with this car...but in reality it should be done on every new car to remove all the particles from the fresh engine!!! seriously do a 1200 mile and a 7500 mile change!!! i view them mandatory for this car...i haven't had one problem so far!!! i have about 8300 miles on her now!!! with the dinan tune my car is a smooth beast now!!!! hell the dinan tune even made my car much more enjoyable to drive in traffic!!!! but seriously get an oil change man for the lousy 70 bucks or whatever even 100 it's worth it!!!!! if you drove the car off the lot and floored it right away and didn't do a proper break in that could also be causing this!!! hell on the s63 we have the engine is so big i have to stop by the dealer every 2000 miles for them to top it off!!!!

Curious - are you parked on a hill when you get the notice? I have the problem on my driveway (5 ft pitch up on a 30 ft long driveway), nose out.

It happens to me too! And it's been below 30 degrees when I leave the house in the morning and I park on a slope with the front of the car facing the street. Once I drive about 10-15 minutes, the warning goes away and when I check the engine oil, it's in the middle. A lot of people who park on a slope has the same problem.

Why drive 10-20-30 minutes, or more, just to save the $5 for a quart of oil? Doesn't seem to make sense just because you have all-inclusive maintenance.
