Grinding getting worse....
I have read alot of threads about the rough 1st to 2nd shift, but thought it was supposed to get better with age. Mine is really getting worse and now it seems to even grind when going into 3rd. I am probably just going to take it to the dealer, but I wonder if I am just being anal...

I have somewhat of a stupid question, as this is my first MT car. When you talk about grinding, what are you referring to exactly? Is it a noise that you'll hear, i.e., metal on metal? Is it loud? Or is it something you feel when you shift gears?

it is an actual grinding sensation you feel in your hand when shifting...it feels like the teeth of the gears are grinding...i don't know how else to explain it

Well my car is about a month old, and I've had that sensation from day one...especially when I shift from 1st to second gear. I had 2 friends of mine drive it (who also drive MT cars), and they said it was fine. I figured it was normal and didn't think twice about it until right now. For me, when I shift from 1st to 2nd, it sometimes (not always) feels like i'm not nailing the shift tooth into the gear. Sometimes it's very smooth, and at other times, it feels "rubbery" I assumed this was normal. I dunno if it's worth taking the car in. Also, every now and then (approx once every week or two) i have a hard time putting the shift gear into reverse. It just won't go in sometimes. I have to mess with it for a while to get it in.

FWIW, I think our cars all tend to grind a little in the 1-2 shift if you are at very high RPMs in 1st (i.e., around redline). It seems that all the 330's do it, based on other reports -- including C&D's reviews. But grinding into 2nd at reasonable RPMs or grinding in other gears would be a problem I'd take to the dealer.

To add to the above, I thought the synchronization built into the transmission prevented the gears from grinding?

I never had anything like that. I think your clutch needs adjustment.
The only problem I have is that I have to push the stick and pop it into some gears sometimes, especially first.

Yeah. I think people are delusional when they say it is a "world class" shifter. I mean, just go drive a Mazda MX5 or any Audi product and you really see how bad our shifter is.

I think your transmision is Ok, rubbery is the trade mark characteristic of this e9X 6 speed manual. Metal to metal grinding is however not Ok.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_transmission To the OP, best way to not have gears grinding is to push the clutch in! |

No problem man, you were the one that thought the grinding would heal themselves (get better with age)... Anytime you want some lessons just drive yourself out to colorado. |

Making sure the floor mat was allowing the clutch pedal to reach the floor fully. Meaning, check if the floor mat is getting in the way of the pedal from reaching the floor fully. Once they took care of that, their grinding issues "disappeared"

No problem. Just pointing out that there can be some obvious solutions to issues.
Does this happen in all gears, some, and/or is it pretty consistent? Meaning if you're driving around for lets say 30 minutes and try coming to a stop and going from there driving normally from 1st gear on-wards, does it still grind? If it does, it's more likely going to be a mechanical issue. I don't know how the transmission is built in this car (more then likely it's using triple synchros for gears 2-6; Meanwhile 1st and Reverse do not.) but it's either going to be transmission or related to it. Either way, go to BMW and get it looked at. They'll know what to look for. On another note, does any one know if there's a HELMS manual out for the 335i 6mt? I'd love to get my hands on one of those
