V2 question

I tried asking this on the vishnu forum but am to impatient to wait for a response.

Hey Shiv,
what are the optimal tq settings with the new beta firmware and updated newly published map. I use full tanks of 100 octane all the time?

Thanks Dan

Oh and is the new firmware needed / necessary in order for the new maps to work?

Depends on what you boost, i cant run more than 90% or i'll hit 20psi... I always run 100oct as well but im waiting for Shiv to release a catless DP specific map. I also want to know why the outside temp has such an affect on my boost, when its 40 degrees outside i dont get more than 8-12psi, when its 70+ degrees i get 14-16psi at 90% settings... I just want to know if i can change that...

And yes you need the new firmware. Think that was already said in one of the many V2 threads.

That the factory ECU is a lot smarter than we give it credit for with regards to controlling power output. It also means not to get so hung up on boost pressure. Yes, monitor it. Either through a boost gauge or through tuning software (if available). But realize that it does not equal engine load which is the real determinator of how much work an engine is doing. Boost will change as a function of charge air temp. Which means:

1) That during a 1st to 4th gear run, you will see more slightly boost in 4th gear than you see in 3rd. Slightly more in 3rd that you see in 2nd. And more in 2nd than you saw in 1st (ignoring throttle closure caused by traction control of course).

2) On hot days, you will see more boost than you do during cool nights.

3) That a good intercooler upgrade will actually lower your boost pressures based upon its ability to cool the air better.

4) If you idle your car for a while (which will increase charge temps due to intercooler heatsoak, heat saturation of ic pipes, etc,.) you will see more boost when you immediately take off and begin a run. Conversely, if you are cruising alone the highway for a while (intercooler and piping is nice and cool), you will see slightly less boost than normal when you jump the throttle. Boost pressure will then rise, during the run, as things get hotter and intake charge increases.

^^ Well that answers my question but im wondering if that can be changed to not adjust boost per the outside temp... Can anything be done about it so i constantly run the same boost all the time no matter what the outside temp is my main question...

an external boost controller....not run off the computer. The reason its boosting higher in hotter temps cause its trying to make the same power. In colder weather the boost is lower but its making the same power (or should be).

I believe in cold weather, the ECU runs more timing and less boost
and in warmer weather, the ECU runs less timing and more boost to make the same desired HP.

In all of my turbo'd cars (rx7, wrx, and srt4) they all ran less boost when the temps were cold and more boost when the temps went up....when ran off the factory boost solenoids.

well if your ambient air temps are lower isn't that compensating for the lower boost?

I dont know... If im making the same power on 11psi at 40 degrees as i am at 16psi in 70 degree weather then im fine with that, i just didnt know thats how it works...

So basically the torque settings need to be adjusted for exteme temperature changes like going from 30 degress to 80?? For people who have Winter and summer i guess we need to look at this more carefully when the seasons change!!

Just thought I'd let you guys know too.
I spoke to Shiv extensively today on the phone.
He will be releasing his "User Torque Settings Guidelines" very soon.

He said he'll explain everything about the torque settings in depth from the very basic settings for us 91 Octane folks with stock intake, exhaust, etc all the way up what settings and so forth that is needed to get up to 400 whp.

Lastly, he mentioned he will be dynoing a Dinan flashed car and posting those comparison results soon too.

Dan, if I were you, running 100 Octane full time, I'd start out with settings of like 97% and datalog it.
Drive for a 1/4-1/2 tank on those settings to see if all is ok.

But again, Shiv should let you know, you may be, and probably are safe to go to 99-100% if you are running 100 Octane full time and have catback exhaust, and at least drop in air filter.

Driver72 have I told you lately that I love you... thanks for your advice. Tomorrow I will upload the new firmware and map. I think I'll set my settings at 96% across the board as they are now. let it adapt, do some data logging and go from there...

Thanks again man and yes I do have a cat back exhaust and drop in filter (K&N at the moment) but I have the ITG in my cabinet... undecided which one to go with for good.
