Sideswiped a trash can...broke side mirror

Hit a plastic trash can by the side of the road today with my right side mirror. Busted the glass out of the mirror....Anyone out there ever had to repair a side mirror that can give some insight as to what I am in for?
Thanks

I had a semi-truck side swipe my mirror just like that. All I had to do was order the new mirror piece itself on ebay for about $60 and it just pops back into place

do you think it matters what glass I order. I have auto dimming on my car, and if it makes any difference I have the auto folding feature also....there is a disconnected wiring harness visible now....Not sure if that plugs into something on the mirror or not

Auto-dimming and folding both make a difference, a very, very expensive one. Check at www.getbmwparts.com and have a stiff adult beverage in your hand. Yep, the electrical connection does plug into something.
What is your insurance deductible?
I just replaced the motor assembly and that was a DIY to the tune of about $450. The mirror, housing and other goodies will raise the ante.
I'd check with the local junk yard as quick as possible.
Good luck.

eBay

Get the PN from one of the BMW online part catalogs (Why not used? The rest of the car is 8 years old, isn't it?)

I am looking at parts websites as we speak...Looks like about $250 for the glass alone for an auto-dim.....As complicated as this part is with auto-dim, etc...it might be worth it to get a new part

Try to find a complete assembly on ebay? might be easier and cheaper.

I had to replace one on 08 328 XI A few months back. BMW cost to body shop was $250. It won't be the same without the right part.

I just replaced the heated auto-dimming glass. It cost about $250, and took about 30 seconds to snap in place.

Like others said above you can find a replacement on ebay. Don't file a insurance claim.

Yeah, the bump in cost to get the auto dim is quite substantial. Was that the price just for the glass or the housing as well?

Yeah, $266 sounds about right. It's steep.
