Digital display for gas tank level?
So, I know there's a hidden menu within the OBC, though I'm not sure how to access it off the top of my head. Is there any way to enable a digital display of the gas tank level? Something that tells me how many gallons are in the tank instead of full, half, or quarter, etc? Is there any way to get a read out of, say, 8.2 gallons? Is it in the hidden menu anywhere?

I do not think so. As far as I know the service/alerts menu does not provide a gas tank read. It is very easy to access these functions, just press the button on your turn signal stalk and follow the instructions.

That's my reasoning for wanting it Eat.Sleep.Race

I'm not sure how accurate such a technology would be.
I like to use the countdown till empty number, as a reference, though. |

Awesome, thank you. Now, sorry for the noob question, but as I said, I have never accessed the hidden menu, I just knew about it. Would you mind posting instructions on how to get into the hidden menu and view the menu for the amount of fuel in the tank? I don't care if it's in litres, I can do the conversion to gallons. I just want something to show a numerical value of how much gas is in the tank. Would make it easier to calculate E85 content.

Here is the hidden menu explained:
http://e90.wikifoundry.com/page/BC+hidden+menus In short here is how to access it: 1. Turn ignition on, or start your car 2. If you have any warnings wait until they are gone 3. Press and hold the button to reset the daytrip/odometer for 10 seconds. Pass the point of service reminders. |

Unfortunately we can't just add stuff that are not added from BMW initially. There is already a fuel indicator in OBC (miles/kilometers left until tank is empty).

Isn't each 1/4 of a tank exactly 4 gallons? It's pretty simple to find out how many gallons you have by looking at the gauge.

Yes, but will your little gauge differentiate 3.9 gallons from 4.0 gallons? Or half tank would be 8 gallons, right? So can you tell me (based on looking at the gauge) when I have 6.8 gallons? I'm asking for more exact figures, let's say I want to add exactly 3.5 gallons of e85. Well, the tank is 16 gallons, right? So 16 gallon capacity, minus the 3.5 gallons of e85 I want to add, puts me at 12.5 gallons of gas in the tank. Now, you'd say, oh that's right above the 3/4 mark, right? Well how far above exactly? I want 12.5 not 12.6 or 12.4....... Is your gauge that accurate? It's not as "pretty simple" as you think.

the cluster always knows the exact fuel level digitally, that's how it drives the gage.
however, the reading from the fuel senders is buffered. even if you get a digital readout, it's not going to be exact within .1 gallon because the fuel is sloshing around and the cluster uses hysteresis to smooth out the signal, otherwise the needle on the gage would bounce up and down constantly (like old cars with a mechanical sender). I'm kind of surprised how buried it is. It was quite simple to get a fairly accurate liters readout in BMWs made 30 years ago by simply pressing 2 buttons on the OBC.. this is 2014 and you have to go through a hidden menu that requires multiple button presses? |

Fuel won't be "sloshing around" while I'm stopped at the gas pump. I think you guys are misunderstanding my projected use for this feature. I don't care how much fuel is in the tank while I'm driving, I'll depend on the gauge for that. But when I pull up to the pump, car level, stopped, not sloshing around, I'd want to know how much gas is in the tank so I know how much 93 to add, and how much e85 to add.
My method of use would be, drive around town dependent on the gas gauge. Go to the gas station to get gas, stop the car on a level surface, put it in neutral, set the e-brake, navigate through the hidden menu to find out how many litres are in the tank currently, convert that to gallons, add (X amount) of 93 then add (X amount) of e85 to get my blend that I'm looking for. I don't plan to use it while driving around, staring at it thinking "oh no, I only have 1.3 litres of gas left, I better find a station"
