Question 335i wastegate actuators and cold engine idling

It's winter here, outside temps are around 25 deg. F. Today, after starting the cold engine I had a look into the engine bay and saw the wastegate actuators working / regulating all the time during engine idling. The permanent wastegate adjustments went away after driving the car when the engine got normal operating temperatures. I use the PROcede v2.0.2 12-19 with the corresponding latest firmware.

Anybody knows if this is normal and why the wastegates have to be adjusted permanently on a cold turbo engine ? Or is it a problem my car could have which should be analyzed and solved ?

Thank you for your help and merry Christmas to everybody !

Eugen.

perhaps the system calibrates itself ? self diagnosis kind of thing ?

It did not look like calibrating. I will try to reproduce this tomorrow again and test if it stops when I slightly increase the engine revs. I got aware about it by hearing the adjustments / wastegate actuator movements. It watched to it 3-4 minutes, then I drove the car. Engine idling itself is normal and smooth.

The waste gate actuators should typically engage directly on boost. I haven't seen the stock turbos in person but It could be that they could be engage electronically by using a remote boost sensor.

It's just part of the cold start procedure, there's a ton of things the ECU does during a cold start to get the engine and exhaust warmed up as quickly as possible.

When I drive of with my car there is a weird compression sound coming from the engine bay on acceleration, until it got to normal temps, it only began in winter too, could that be the same thing you've discovered?

i believe this is normal operation to help get warmer air (air that got heated by the turbo) onto the cats for faster warm up of the cats.

Yes because the wastegates pump warm heated air from the turbos onto the cats.
