Motortrend: 2015 BMW i8: Is i The New M?

I know some peeps have been claiming that the i8 isn't a really a sports car and that it's no match for the M3/M4...well I think you'd better reconsider:

0-60mph: 3.8s (quicker than M4)
1/4mi: 12.4 112.1 (same as M4 but lower trap speed)
MT figure eight: 24.6s (faster than a Alfa Romeo 4c)

So it's quick and it can handle. And it's lighter than a M4 and of course it gets great gas mileage (which I don't really care about). And it looks MEGA epic. If you had the money why would you pick a M4/M3 over the i8?

Also I drove a F-Type R (like the one in the beginning of the bid) and it was FCKING AMAZING. Wicked fast and sounds liked sweet thunder. The best part is when you lift off throttle and there's a procession of crackles, pops and overrun. Not sure I ever smiled as much in my life as I did when I drove it in a tunnel.

Battery life is still a limiting factor on that car's performance. Until that thing can do a full day of track work without having to recharge or regenerate its battery, I don't see people cross-shopping it with the M4.

Also, though they have listed 1/4, 0-60 times and figure-8 times...I still haven't seen anyone compare track times.

That's a big IF. The better question is...IF i had the money for a i8 (~$150k, not accounting for the markup), would I pick it over a 991 GT3, R8 V10, M3+GTR/Cayman GTS, etc? Probably not.

But it is a sick car!

I'd agree with this!

My understanding is that it's a hybrid. It's not like a Tesla Model S that's all electric. The internal combustion engine in the i8 actually sounds really really good. That to me is a big plus over other hybrids and electric cars.

I get what you guys mean by all the other cars that are in the price range that are offer better performance (though clearly the i8 is no slouch) but I think owning an i8 would provide a truly exotic/unique experience over driving a Porsche 911, GTR, R8.
