not me, but it has been known to happen.
Quite expensive to replace, so best let the dealer know. SJ |

Does your driving consist of short runs stop start. If it is then your PF is probably clogged, my lease company tell us not to get PF if we do short stop start trips. They also advise giving it an "italian tune up" above 50 mph every two weeks if the car is run on short runs stop/start.

My everyday journey involved quite a bit of open road and I’ve only done 17k, the filter should last way more then this. That alone is quite worrying in terms reliability
I’ve spoken to the dealer and subsequently booked in for further investigation, more update here after the service. |

Unfortunately James all you petrol heads only have the catalyst to fail and don't the sixes have two? Ouch.

yes, the 335i has two primary or precats just behind the manifold, then two secondary cats in the centre section.
The 325i from what I can see only has a single cat within the exhaust manifold off the engine, and has a centre section muffler later before the backbox

The advice of our leasing company is:
If you are quoting/ordering on a diesel vehicle with a Exhaust Particulate Filter EPF/DPF please ensure that you are aware of the manufacturers operating instructions as there is a risk of reliability issues if they are not heeded. Drivers who drive mainly in urban areas are most at risk of their EPF clogging up and their car having to make regular trips to their local dealer. In the case of some drivers this has meant visiting their dealer once every six weeks or so to have the filter unblocked as their driving occurs predominantly in traffic at low speed. According to manufacturer guidelines, unless an EPF-equipped diesel engine is operated at 50mph for at least 20 minutes, or covers 50 miles at motorway speeds at least once every couple of weeks, there is an extreme risk of the EPF clogging up. If you know your car is going to spend most of its time in urban areas at low speed, then it’s worth avoiding a car with an EPF.

Very interesting jwbmw - do some BM's not come 'as default' with a DPF?

I think you'll find that all BMW diesels now come with one/two as standard Carl. It's part of the emission reduction system so there's no chance of ordering a car without one.

I concur, they were standard fit on both my E60 and E92. Just as well most of my mileage is on Motorways / Dual Carriage Ways above 50 mph

It seems BMW have installed a very high tech DPF, which uses regenerative technology to effectively keep renewing the filter. High exhaust temperatures are needed so that soot is burnt off the filter. However, light urban drivers rarely reach such temperates and therefore clog the filter.
