Okay, sent a couple questions to the good folks at Dinan and received a reply back today.

Q: Can I revert back to the stock tune afterwards?
A: Yes, you can revert to the stock tune via the “bypass” feature.

Q: Can the Dtronic unit be reused on another like vehicle?
A: The unit (and harness, depending upon the new car purchased) can be moved to another car. You may need a new harness and the appropriate software would need to be purchased for the new car, but he Dtronics box and possibly the harness could be moved to another vehicle.

Q: Will I be able to change maps and monitor settings of the Dtronic?
A: At this time, an Authorized Dealer would perform this process but in the very near future you will have access via a smart phone app!

Follow-up Question

Q: Can I transfer my Dinan Stage 1 (including Dtronic) to another M235i?
A: If it was exactly the same car, no changes to the program would be necessary. If not, just the programming would be necessary, assuming the same harness is applicatble.

I just confirmed with Dinan the warranty follows the software, not the hardware. So, for example, you get another M235i and everything works perfectly no mods needed you have the option of repurchasing the software for $500 or whatever it comes out to (I am pretty sure that's about right) and you have a new warranty good for 48 months.

That is much I think you will ever see off on a newly released Dinan product. By the time the M2 gets released it might fall down to $1600 or so. I like the fact when my lease is up I can get the unit removed and sell it to another M235i owner. Have the car restored back to default tune as well.

Spoke with Joe at Dinan today, just some info that might help overseas customers. If your country doesn't have authorized Dinan dealers, no sweat. Dinan will send you the unit with the software pre-installed. This is good news for me since I'm in England. Thought it might help out some others in similar situations.

You don't need to have an "authorized dealer" install it even if you're not overseas. You can just request for them to send it to you and install it yourself.

Interesting, as all the information I get back usually states see your authorized Dinan dealer. What is needed to order the kit directly from Dinan?

** Update ** Called Dinan and they can ship the unit pre-programmed for my VIN and installation instructions. No shipping charges or tax, sweet! Just received the color, step-by-step .pdf instructions for installation.

I don't think anything is needed but I too was under the impression that only Dinan dealers could perform the install. For some reason, I thought they had to mate the software to your specific car as I gathered from their marketing material...which is false. When I asked the Dinan rep "Why can it can only be installed at a dealer?" he corrected me and said of course not, you absolutely can install it yourself.

There is no "mating" process and they don't need your VIN.

Gone through the instructions now a few times and basically you do the following:
  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal in trunk
  2. Remove plastic engine cover and both rear plastic covers along the cowl
  3. Layout Dinan wire harness along the engine cowl area behind the hood molding
  4. Disconnect 3 ECU connections (in order) on drivers side of the engine
  5. Connect Dinan receiving plugs into two of the 3 ECU connectors
  6. Install the 2 new Dinan ECU connectors and original ECU connector back in
  7. Secure wires near engine and along the cowling
  8. Connect Dtronic ECU to the 2 bundle wire connectors
  9. Connect postive wire from Dtronic ECU to battery post
  10. Velco the Dtronic ECU onto the fuse box
  11. Reinstall rear plastic covers and engine cover
  12. Reconnect negative battery in trunk
  13. Power on car without starting (Accessory Power)
  14. Clear any engine fault codes one at time until all are removed
  15. Start Engine

Note step 4 has to be done in order so the release lever for the connector has room to travel to the right and push the connector up and out of the ECU. Once you get 1 out of the way then 2 can release more freely, and followed by number 3.

@Delnari I asked over on the other forum also, but did Dinan already ship out the unit or do you know when they will? Are you guaranteed to receive it before your dyno appointment which I think you said is on Thursday?

Being sent Monday; wasn't able to get out in the mail on Friday after programming. Sent 3-Day Select via UPS, so should arrive NLT Thursday. Pushed my Dyno appointment to Friday afternoon.

** Update ** Had Dinan upgrade my shipping to 2-Day for scheduled delivery on Wednesday, 8/20. Didn't want to take a chance with UPS screwing up my deliver as I need to get it installed and test before Friday's Dyno run.

Any predictions for my Dinan Stage 1 with aFe Intake and M Performance muffler? The best I have seen with the BMS N55 Stage 1 was 323 HP and 366 TQ (uncorrected values). My hope is 333 HP and 382 TQ (uncorrected values). Will post the new Dyno sheet Friday evening so place you bets early .

Anything special need to happen to dyno? What is the proper way to Dyno a auto vs a manual?

For an auto I guess you would go Sports + and manually shift the gears to the closet 1:1 gear and make the pull? 5th gear?

Might hit up the next dyno day one of the local shops will have in the future.

Honestly I'm expecting about the same results, give or take 3-4 HP/TQ.

I'm also interested in this, considering I'm planning on leasing a M235i in the very near future. Never had a factory F/I car before, and I've never messed around with tuning myself, so I'll probably get it installed at a local Dinan dealer. Any word on how this would/could affect a lease?

Adding a Tune module like the Dinan is a simple plug-n-play kit. Plugs inline with 2 of the factory ECU connections (no splicing). Will have my write up of the install in a little bit here to show how it was done.

You have a choice at lease turn-in, leave it on or remove it. If you remove it you can have it put back to the factory default tune.

Correction - Once you remove the tune from the car you need to clear any codes that maybe caused by it's removal; as it was explained to me. Will have a better understanding of this step once I received the unit tomorrow.

That wording seems a little confusing, unless maybe I don't understand.

By removing it (the Dinan plug in), the car would be put back to factory...nothing else needs to be done, just unplug and remove it and the car is back to stock. Correct?
