Angry Wheel Chipped Way Too Easily

So the other day I pulled out of a parking spot without knowing there was a curb to my right and lightly, I repeat LIGHTLY, scraped it with my back wheel. I got out to look and saw this.

WTH!? I've never seen anything like it before. The surface of the rim just chipped and crumbled off like paper mache. Rims on previous cars have survived hits and scrapes much worse than this over their lifetime with nothing more than a couple light scratches. Unfortunately these rims, which are near impossible to keep clean because of the "water reservoir", also stick way out farther than the surface of the tire.

This 2er is my first BMW. Is this typical of BMW rims? What can I do? Has this happened to anyone else with their 2?

Maybe the curb wasn't smooth? That does stink though. Gotta be careful with those curbs man. I hate curb rashing my wheels. Takes me at least two weeks to forget about it.

Werd. Never seen the fiancé so apologetic than when she nicked the ones on my 2 .

Paint pen will help but that the problem with Alluminum, soft ass metal... Looks like paint may not have properly bonded?

Looks like you got closer than you think. You can see that its fairly deep scratches and grooves.

There should be a wheel repainter in your area. There are a couple of good ones here. It runs about $100 a wheel to get them fixed looking like new. It is done in a day with the wheel still on the car.

Do you know what it is that they actually do? I've seen some repaired wheels and it's tough to tell there was any damage.

They use a filler to smooth the rim out and then repaint the wheel. Looks like new when they are done. I had to repair the wheels on my M3.

Touché. But you know what I mean. They have those curbs that have the metal cover on them. And some are, I should have said less rough than others. Not smooth per say.

If your the do it yourself type I bought a wheel repair kit from Bavarian Autosport for my X1 M Sport and it came out good. It has paint, sandpaper, files and putty if you need to fill in which you need. The problem is getting the paint to match these wheels which may not be available yet. A Dremel tool can smooth it out nice after the putty but it is a lot of work.

yup, matching the paint won't be easy since its not the standard wheel color

Ouch! Sucks and I agree the finish seems way too soft. I got a couple scratches/dings on a wheel that feel face down in my garage on epoxy flooring when I was messing with the wheels...thought it would stand on it's own while I grabbed something and it didn't.

I did the same thing; it was a small chunk that had to be repaired. For a DIY job, I thought it came out decent enough.

Thanks for all the input. I'll look into getting it repaired after a little time goes by. I'd hate to get it repaired and then have it happen again soon afterward. At least in my case I almost never see it as it's on the opposite corner of the vehicle from me. (Also, in my defense, my wife was in the car with me at the time and will vouch for me that I only lightly scrapped the curb.)

But everyone else, be careful out there! They're softer than you think.

Sorry.. but how would you know if you've scraped it lightly or normal? I'm a master at curb rashing and sometimes I thought I scraped a lot but in reality it was only a little, when I scraped a little, there's this huge dent.

Sounds like when you pull out without knowing a curb, that damage looks about right since you're making an angle when pulling out and there's a force hitting curb, not just a simple scrape. However, I do see there's paint chipping further inward which is weird.. but I've never ran stock wheels so I wouldn't know what to expect from stock.

PS. I scrape my wheels about once every two months. Don't ask, I swear I passed my driver license test.

I just had mine dismounted for powdercoat today and they had several scrapes from just the tire machine. imo, these wheels do not have a sturdy factory finish. Probably the worst OEM finish I have seen, as far as durability.

Any curb will damage your wheel. I curb it twice during my ED trip on the same wheel and I destroy the rim.

Not a big deal!
