They aren't the same engine. The cylinder heads are different. The injection technology is different. The rotating assembly is different. It is not a simple swap. Trade in your car for a 335 and save yourself the hassle.

Its pretty easy actually... just buy a set of 335 snails and tape them to the top of the valve cover with some scotch tape, close the hood, and let it sit overnight. In the morning it will be the same as an N54 since the only difference is the turbos as you have pointed out. Also, don't forget to disconnect the battery so that your ECU can adapt to the newfound FI hardware that you have under the hood.
Seriously though, its not the same engine, and you could save yourself a HUGE headache and lots of money by just selling your car and buying a 335 if that is the powerplant that you want.

In addition, the cylinder block is even different. It is not the magnesium-aluminum block as found in the 328i... it is a full aluminum block based off of the E46 330i.

yeah they are 2 totally different engines..diferent materials one has 2 intakes diect injection...and a slew of other technologies the 328 doesn't have...i don't think it would have won so many awards if it was the same and they just slapped 2 turbo's on...damn do a little research before you make a comment like that...you seemed confident too which is scary!!! it would cost you more than the 4-5k difference in just buying a 335 instead!!! and to the where there is a will there is a way yeah for more money...also you wouldn't have the better trans that's in the 335 esp in case of the auto the difference between the 2 is night and day!!!! and since it is the magnesium alloy engine it is not going to be as strong as the all aluminum block though it is lighter you can't put down near as much power as you could with the n54 in the 335!!!

tough crowd.
the answer is yes, you could put twin turbos on a 328i. the ones from the 335? maybe, but they won't be a simple bolt on affair, and if the heads are different, they may not bolt on at all. depends on how much money you want to spend. Fact is, if you can package it and fit it in the engine compartment / chassis, you can turbocharge, supercharge any engine (not already fitted with forced induction). However, the turbos would be just a small part of the equation. As was stated above, some more rudely than others, the engines aren't the same, so you have a host of issues that will need to be addressed and if you managed to get the turbos on and plumbed you could end up exposing weaknesses in the engine not designed for high horsepower that the turbos may develop. Transmission, engine block, rods, pistons, head gaskets, etc. Your $5k custom turbo setup could cost you another $10k in mechanical failures. Not to mention, then finding someone to tune it. It would be a totally custom, expensive, but unique project if completed successfully.
