Coding - turn off Active Sound?

Anyone turn off Active Sound yet?

I wonder how noticeable difference there will be with Active Sound turned off.

One of the first things I will try. Would be nice if we could program a button to enable/disable Active Sound.

+1, I wouldn't mess with it either. I do wish to code the dazzle high beams though

+1 sound is awesome inside cabin. And even better when you lower the windows. No need to turn it off IMO

The idea that people who care about engines don't care that they're hearing a fake version of the very expensive engine they bought is just mystifying to me. It's like paying to bang a super-model who then gives you a blow up doll with a picture of her face on it and you think that's even better than her.

To me, there is a difference between live amplification and fake. That said, I don't give a shit... I'm not buying the car to listen to it.

yeah and this is fake.

Edit: also, funny that you say that because I'm going to buy a Zoom H1 just so I can capture the sound of my e93 w/ ACM exhaust mod before I no longer have the car. It's awesome. So I'll definitely miss the sound but I'm sure there'll be other things to make up for it. That said, low sound or no sound is better than electronically generated sound ... I'm not buying a video game.

Truth! The E92 sounded like a lawnmower in stock form but when you put an aftermarket exhaust on it, at least you would hear THAT exhaust note and not one piped through the speakers. I really hope we can code out the autotune shit in the future for the F8x.

Maybe for me it's because I grew up in the 80s without much money; if you wanted a car you got a job, bought a beater that didn't run and then worked on it for a few months until it was reliable. Maybe from there you traded up.

I still remember going jogging with my dog on Sunday nights and passing all of my buddy's houses and they were all working on their cars.

Listening to my car with a keen ear was a way of life for 10 years ... Maybe if I grew up without that or with more video games or something I'd feel different.

But hey, there's people that don't care and clearly BMW knows that. I'm not one of them.

I'm baffled that people actually LIKE the piped sound, let alone aren't outraged. But this place is really a potpourri of different people so it says alot about the wide range of owners. I sit here scratching my head about how hideous some of the paint choices are and they tend to be the most popular ones. Different strokes for different folks.

Misfits. Played loud enough even I can sing along. I probably won't ever hear the fake/real/ lawn mower.

Attitude! A great song.

Reason I want to turn off active sound is so that if something is wrong with the engine (and it makes a noise that it shouldn't), I don't want the sound of the engine problem muffled by the active sound.

Clearly. Few would, at least few who've heard a proper performance engine sing.

Well, you can forget all that. The new car is fitted with a turbocharged straight six. Turbocharging? In an M car? That’s like putting gravy on an ice cream.

I'm sure there is a light for that.

Is this a pre-recorded soundtrack like it is in the M5 or is there an actual mic in the engine recording it real time?

Per my understanding it's the sound of the engine piped in... I don't give a shit either way cause it sounds amazing.

Nope. As I understand it, the ECU takes what the engine SHOULD sound like at that load level, and that throttle position, and that boost level, and that RPM, and pipes that sound into the cabin. In other words, yes, it is pre-recorded sound (albeit very complex pre recorded sound, based on many parameters)

Quote:

Yeah, in most situations there probably is, but sometimes, even in this era of computer controlled engines, occasionally something will just not sound right, but not 'not-right' enough to trigger a warning light. I'd like to be able to hear that sound.

Exactly - it's a video game: it looks at your joystick, brake buttons, etc and generates the sound accordingly. it's fake.

And what is still unknown if if it's pre-recorded or generated - based on the very fuzzy responses from Biermann and others I'd say it's digitally generated ... i.e., they're electronically duplicating the wave forms based on real-world measures from test cars

+1 and also I'd just like to hear the mechanics I'm paying $80k for - that's part of paying for this art.

Unfortunately it's gotten to the point where for the US market they have to use special differential oil because otherwise it will make a sound and people will bring it in to their dealer.

In other words we've crossed into Oz ... most drivers didn't grow up close to mechanical things and/or raw cars - so now BMW has to eliminate all of the real sounds and generate fake sounds.

But don't try to tell anyone you're getting DCT over MT

EDIT: they should totally Dukes-or-Hazzard it and also generate tire squealing so even when you casually pull out of a parking spot you get all kinds of tire squeal! That would sound awesome too!
